Purvanchal is a geographic region of north-central India, which comprises the eastern end of Uttar Pradesh state.
Purvanchal comprises chiefly of three divisions -- the eastern-Awadhi region in the west, the western-Bhojpuri region in the east and the northern-Baghelkhand region in the south.
Purvanchal includes the districts of Varanasi, Chandoli, Ghazipur, Jaunpur, Mirzapur, Sonbhadra, Sant Ravidas Nagar, Gorakhpur, Kushinagar, Deoria, Azamgarh, Mau, Maharajganj, Basti, Sant Kabir Nagar, Siddharth Nagar, Ballia.

Making use of this new development, Purvanchal —- the Bhojpuri speaking area is being aggressively propagated as an area totally distinct in culture from the rest of UP, to pave way for creating a division in the minds of people.
Eventhough Purvanchal, like Allahabad is part of the mainstream UP culture, and Bhojpuri is a great culture in itself, but if the state is being divided on regional basis, then Allahabad most certainly belongs in central UP.
Purvanchal is the most populated region of the entire country.

The citizens of Purvanchal are perhaps comfortable with this inevitability – to be able to live the lives they do in remote villages and small towns, which both the state capital of Lucknow and national capital of Delhi have forgotten even exist.
The largest town in Purvanchal is Gorakhpur, set amidst an agricultural backwater largely untouched by the Green Revolution that has boosted the regions to the west – Haryana, Punjab and the western half of Uttar Pradesh.
The leaders of Purvanchal have often claimed that the discriminatory policy of the Uttar Pradesh government in Lucknow responsible for the backwardness of the region, leading to the demand for a separate state.

Incidentally, the demand for a separate Bundelkhand State had also been raised by the Congressmen during the party's first leadership development camp held in Chitrakoot, in the Bundelkhand area of the State, recently.
The participants claimed that out of the 18 crore population of U.P., seven crore people alone resided in the Purvanchal (eastern) region of the State.

In the third five-year plan, the Planning Commission had divided the state up in five economic zones, including central and western UP, Bundelkhand, Uttarakhand and Purvanchal, LJP state general secretary Rajkumar Ojha said demanding the formation of Purvanchal to eradicate poverty and ensure development of the region.
Purvanchal had a population of over six crore according to 1991 census and 147 assembly and 28 Parliament seats, which forms basis of formation of the new state," Ojha said, adding that in Tripura, Meghalaya, Manipur and Arunachal were some states with only two parliamentary seats.
The party will take up the matter and try to drive home the point that it should be given the status of a separate state, he added.

Patanjali was awarded the Chugoku Soka Gakkai's Hiroshima Peace Award for his promotion of the philosophy and movement of nonviolence and humanistic education as Gandhi Bhawan Deputy Director of Delhi University and as Vice Chancellor of Purvanchal University.
