Although not part of Pusan Perimeter battles, little mentioned at the time but now recognized as a classic example of small unit team coordination in combat is the capture of Maryang San by the 3rd Battalion, Royal Australian Army.
The NK seriously began an assault on the Pusan perimeter on August 4.
When they finally crossed the Naktong and began their violent assault along the entire Perimeter, simultaneously, only 98,000 NK were attacking about 180,000 US and ROK troops.

Pusan Logistical Command had "only" one mimeograph machine to produce directives issued by the Pusan Logistical Command itself, produce blank forms, and to reproduce nearly all directives received from higher headquarters.
In the period up to the defensive establishment of the Pusan Perimeter, it happened now and then that smaller U.S. units were cut off and isolated by the enemy, or that they were in such a geographical position that no supplies could be brought forward by rail, trucks, or by sea.

On January 12, 1950 United States Secretary of State Dean Acheson told the National Press Club that America's Pacific defence perimeter was made up of the Aleutians, Ryukyu, Japan, and the Philippines implying that the U.S. would not fight over Korea, and that the country was outside of American concern in the Pacific.
In the east, at the Battle of Chosin Reservoir (November 26–December 13)a 2,500 man task force from the US 7th Infantry Division was virtually wiped out; the Marines fared better; though surrounded and forced to retreat, they inflicted heavy casualties on the Chinese who committed 6 divisions while trying to destroy the Marines.
UN forces in northeast Korea withdrew to form a defensive perimeter around the port city of Hungnam, where a Dunkirk-style evacuation was carried out in late December 1950.

When the DPRK forces pushed towards the city of Pusan on July 25, 1950, the U.S. tried to help ROK forces hold them off (see Sigint and the Pusan Perimeter).
The Soviets originally did not feel that the United States would become involved, and when the U.S. started supporting the ROK army at the city of Pusan, which later became the Pusan Perimeter, they realized there would be a larger threat than they anticipated coming from he UN allies (Stokesbury 51).
This Pusan Perimeter battlefront was active thru the beginning of August, at which point the numbers were added up and it appeared that the DPRK forces had suffered much higher casualties than anticipated (Lowe 31).

A critical terrain feature in the breakout was Hill 268 which controlled the Taegu road and the main highway running from Waegwan south along the east bank of the Naktong River.

In early August 1950, UN and American forces dug in for a "last stand" behind the natural boundary of the Naktong River near the most southern part of the Korean peninsula.
They usually had won their battles with the NK while Army units usually had not, and often about half of Army casualties were MIAs while the Marines usually had none.
The Pusan Perimeter succeeded in holding off the North Korean Army for more than a month.

Slowing the enemy advance was critical in order to create the perimeter around the vital seaport of Pusan.

Pusan was a vital port in the area and the US forces and UN representatives knew it must be held at all costs.
After the initial speed of their assault and the staggering gains in territory at the start of the campaign the NKPA forces were to eventually encounter a significantly more powerful enemy.
