Push polls are generally viewed as a form of negative campaigning.
Perhaps the most famous alleged use of push polls is in the 2000 United States Republican Party primaries, when it was alleged that George W. Bush's campaign used push polling to torpedo the campaign of Senator John McCain.

In fact, the intent is to "push" the voters away from one candidate and toward the opposing candidate.
The results of "Push Polls" should never be reported by the media, but the use of such polls by a candidate may, of course, be a legitimate news story.

Poll as that term should be reserved for acts of deviousness.

ABC News conducted a poll over the weekend about the Terri Schiavo case which purports to show that the American public strongly opposes any intervention in the Schiavo case, and support for Michael Schiavo's right to cut off Terri's food and water.
If the poll were merely to include the fact that he's lived with another woman for years and has kids by/with her, that alone would likely dramatically impact the survey results.
I think ABC was perhaps being dishonest with their polling question formats, but I think it is also possible that there is some level of over-reaction on the part of those who say that Terri hasn't been on life-support.

Push polling is not intended to get accurate results for candidates to use in speeches, it is intended to wound the image of the opposition.
It is also intended to pull the person taking the "poll" into dropping their candidate and voting for the opposition, and many times does, but this year may be an occasion for a large disenfranchised voter base who is disillusioned and tired of shady politicking practices.
In the case of push polling, it probably relates to the fact that to poll is not about pulling information in at all, but about pushing information out to likely voters in an under the radar approach.
