However, in my experience the pushup is perhaps the most improperly performed bodyweight exercise seen in the fitness world today...yet one of the most beneficial for you when done correctly as stated above.
I use pushups as one of my postural and movement assessments to screen for muscle imbalances and or weakness in all of my clients.
If not, I start them in an up position and see if they are able to stabilize and hold this position, then descend their whole body towards the ground in a slow controlled manner and up again the same way.

My favorite pushups:  1,  66,666 (it’s a number of the beast thing),  100,000,  123,456,  and 200,000 (I was gonna stop at 200,001 before I wrote this letter, but I was hot [DC is almost unbearable] and confused and did an extra pushup which got me to 200,002).
Humbling note:  Recently on NPR (where else) there was a story of a guy who set the new world record of pushups in one hour (see, I’m not the only freak).
Final note:  Were I able to do 3,669 pushups per hour then, with the hours I’ve logged, I’d have done by now about 3,095,718 pushups.

My body is still sore from the situps and pushups I did a couple of days ago.
Nothing special about my regimen, just do steady training until my body is conditioned to do sixty consecutive pushups in two minutes, and sixty consecutive situps in the same amount of time.
Pushups - this is one of the most balanced strength and body exercises you can do.

Another idea, just for pushups cut two short sections of 3" or more PVC and use them on the floor.
They are very sturdy and you can do a burnout set of shoulder presses when you are immediately done with the pushups (if you are so inclined).
Incidentally if you have the old fashioned dumbbells you can do an incredibly difficult chest exercise where you do a flye while you are in the push up position and the dumbbells move in and out as if you had an ab wheel in either hand.

However, the pushups were not exactly the full-ranging chest to floor, but were the variety where the chest just-barely broke the plane at the elbow.
Not sure why anyone would want to do that type of pushup.

If I start out on January 1st, 2004 by doing one pushup and build up at a steady rate so that I finish the year on December 31st by doing 1000, that's a thousandfold increase.
It shouldn't be too painful, since I will spend a year building up to 1000 pushups, and even then, it shouldn't take more than a half hour to complete them (at 1.8 seconds per pushup).
And doing pushups everyday will not hurt you because by the time your capable of doing the 100+ youll be really fit, considering you want to do them non-stop.

The Dive-Bomber Pushup is often confused with the Dand or Hindu Pushup.
Keeping your hips close to the ground and your hands directly beneath your shoulders, drive your head up towards the sky until you are looking straight ahead.
If I were performing Dands (or Hindu Pushups), I would simply keep my arms straight and drive my hips back to position 1 in photo 1 and begin the series again.

The regular pushup is not just for building muscle, it's a cardio workout too that burns fat.
The reason pushups don't work to add much strength or mass is because once you can do more than 10-15 you're not really building anything other than endurance for that movement.

Another idea is to do a pushup, touch elbow and knee together then pushup and do it again on another side.
Hinge with legs out is done like a regular pushup but feet together and at the down phase your elbows bend toward the body to touch the ground - while that happens your feet split out with a hop, then back in when the elbows return.
Some girls start with their feet far apart to learn and get stronger, which is fine but you must slowly work them closer so that by routine time your strength shows and you don't look like you're cheating with your feet too far apart.

I read that your CNS eventually makes the movement more efficient with high volumes of pushups, so I wouldnt figure that you are gaining maximal strength, just endurance.
I stress that the road to the top is a long one that takes years to realize.
If you did something like clap pushups or 1-arm pushups that might be another story.
