The dividing line of the two dialects runs eastwards from Thal through the Kohat district almost to the Indus, but it then turns northwards, as the speech of the Akhora Khattaks belongs to the Pushtu or southern dialect.
Thus Pukhtu is spoken in Bajour, Swat and Buner, and by the Yusufzais, Bangash, Orakzais, Afridis and Mohmands; while Pushtu is spoken by the \Vaziris, Khattaks, Marwats and various minor tribes in the south.
Pushtu was spoken in the North-West Frontier province in 1901 by 1,142,011 persons, or 54% of the population.

Pushtu, also known as Pushtun, Pushto, Pashtoe, Pukhto, Pathan, and Afgani (this last term is used mainly in older literature), is the language spoken by Pashtun people who inhabit Afghanistan and North-West Frontier Province in Pakistan.
It is spoken by more than 70% of the Afghan population who are of the Pashtoon tribe, as well as Pashtoons/Pathaans who live on the other side of Durand Line in Pakistan.
Pushtu is believed to have originated in the Kandahar(Qandahar)/Helmand areas of Afghanistan.

This is an appeal against a decision of a refugee status officer of the Refugee Status Branch (RSB) of the New Zealand Immigration Service (NZIS) declining the grant of refugee status to the appellant, a citizen of Pakistan.
It was agreed by both the interpreter and the appellant that the Pushtu used in Pakistan was the same as that used in Afghanistan but in addition contained some Urdu words.
There is no record anywhere on the file of any objection having been raised to the use of the interpreter at the RSB hearing (indeed he had confirmed to the refugee status officer that he did not have any objection to the interpreter).

I thought the book's coverage of Pushtu grammar and vocabulary was superb.
I highly recommend the reprint of this book (since it is cheaper) and the cassette tapes as a beginning to intermediate level Pushtu course.
It has much interesting vocabulary, mostly military; it is a book beyond a beginner's level, though including it, it would be one of the best I have seen, except that you just can't learn pronunciation form it.

A dictionary would be a necessary companion to the book should one wish to pursue any serious study of the language therewith.
*Introduction to Pushtu* is an interesting read for what it is and for when it was first published, but perhaps not the best for learning the modern language.
