Putaruru, a town on State Highway 1, midway between Tokoroa, the hub of New Zealand's massive forestry, timber and pulp and paper industries, and Tirau, a small town that has built a big name for its quaint shops.
Putaruru, which is Maori for 'home of the owl', has a history of farming and timber.
Putaruru's Timber Museum recognises the importance of that industry to the town's development, and every year Putaruru is host to the national woodturning competitions.

Roadmaking was commenced in the late 1880s but the (Line that is the commercial organization responsible for operating a railway system) railway, which was begun by the Thames Valley and Rotorua Railway Co., was the most important factor in the progress of settlement in the area.
The town of Putaruru was surveyed in 1905 and on 18 December an area of 50,987 acres (206 km²), which had previously been acquired from the Thames Valley Land Co. by the Crown and which included town allotments in Putaruru and Lichfield, was opened by ballot.
Putaruru was created a (An urban area with a fixed boundary that is smaller than a city) town district in 1926; on 1 July 1947 it was constituted a (One of the administrative divisions of a large city) borough.

The second mural was completed in December 1998 and placed at the top of Arapuni Street opposite the Putaruru Hotel. ; "A technical challenge" this mural depicts artists' impressions of the town, it's characteristics and surrounds.  The old post office, saw mill, rivers, marae, flora and fauna and the story behind the name of Putaruru.
The Putaruru Water Park is home to two beautiful mosaics designed by Mark Davidson and created by many local volunteers.  One is of trout and bright colours which is Te Waihou inspired, and the other is swirl designs which reflects the indigenous culture of our area, while also depicting a large timber saw.
On the outskirts of the Water Park heading North on SH1 is the HOP Wall (Hands on Putaruru).  This was a community project to mark the new millennium.  The coloured three dimensional tiles are a patent design by the late Mal Lloyd.

Putaruru is based on a history of farming and timber.
Putaruru is also host to a national woodturning exhibition - known appropriately as TurNZ - at which some of the most beautiful work in woodturning anywhere in the world can be seen.
The blue colours of the Putaruru Waterpark mimic the colours of Te Waihou spring.
