Most putouts by a 3rd baseman - Baseball Fever
Hey could anyone help me find who has the most putouts in one inning by a 3rd baseman.
The most putouts by a 3rd baseman in a game is 7 by a few different people.
Since 1900, Pat Dillard of St. Louis had 9 putouts on June 18, 1900 and Art Devlin had 8 for the Giants on May 23, 1908.

However, determining the relative measure of assists versus putouts is a somewhat daunting task.
A first baseman for example will have significantly more putouts than assists, with many of these putouts being chest high throws from infielders that would be caught by any major league player.
However, putouts for second basemen, third basemen or shortstops are far less likely to occur as a result of a ground ball.

Example: Mary had 42 putouts, 70 assists and 3 errors at second base.
Her fielding average is calculated by first adding the number of putouts and assists (42 + 70=112).

Baseball Prospectus | Articles | Breaking Balls: Infield Defense
I've recently written a couple of columns sketching a general measure of outfield fielding by looking at putouts the outfield turns as a percentage of team fly balls, using 2002 season data.
While outfield putouts are context-neutral--each time a putout is recorded the batter, and only the batter, is out--infield putouts are context-heavy.
But that figure doesn't mean all that much, because a first baseman who flips to the pitcher for the putout could swing the ranking from worst to first with 50 courteous plays over the course of the season.

But this approach is a bit simplistic, mainly because a pitcher's own tendency to induce ground balls is a huge factor in the number of assists and putouts he gets.

Their approach involves weighting the number of putouts, assists, and double plays made by each fielder, and comparing those totals to positional norms of other fielders to arrive at a figure above or below average.
Each extra out made, or hit allowed, is worth X runs which leads to the FR figure.
Career figures are considered better indicators than individual seasons as normalization is required for better overall averaging of each fielder's statistical performance.

First of all, let's state the obvious (or at least what I thought was obvious), which is that the amount of chances a center fielder has to make putouts is not unlimited and is dependent on the nature of the pitching-staff he is playing behind.
Center field putouts are also dependent on the ballpark the player plays in and on the two fielders he has playing next to him.
Which is to say that not only is Moore wrong in using putouts as the evidence for a center fielder being great, the use of that wrong stat doesn't even support his point in the season being played right now, let alone in all of baseball history.

You would not then be able to go back and determine those for a first baseman from the 1930s from the box scores, like you can with saves, so there's no historical data to work with, crucial in the world of baseball.
Some of the numbers within fielding win shares are like this -- they have to be figured out -- which gets back to the lack of good fielding stats.

Defensive range is the ability to cover ground and get to more balls than the average fielder, and it's one of the hardest elements of fielding performance to measure.
In the first version of this inning, the official fielding stats record a putout for the catcher (on the strikeout), one assist (on the inning-ending ground out) and one putout (on the popup) for the third baseman, and one putout (on the grounder) for the first baseman.
But the number of putouts in a nine-inning game adds up to 27 no matter how many hits are allowed, and the number of assists is mostly a product of the number of ground balls, not the skill of the infielders.
