Puyo Pop Fever Nintendo DS Video Game Review by AceGamez
Y'see, Puyo Pop Fever - despite branding the sparkly DS logo that'd usually suggest stupendous strides made within the innovation department - is, in actual fact, a carbon copy of the 2004 Gamecube iteration of the same name.
No, this iteration seems to be aimed squarely at a younger generation, a generation yet to experience the devilishly satisfying joys of puyo popping, and as such, the game's unquestionably quirky aesthetics seem to confirm this.
Well, they're Puyos - and they rain down the playing field in different formations a la Tetris, for you to align (as per usual) in similar colours either horizontally or vertically in groups of four.

All this is explained to newbie Puyo Pop players in a non-interactive tutorial that runs during Fever's demo loop.
Puyo Pop is best played against other humans -- not only because it's fun to partake in some friendly (or not so friendly) competitions, but it's always better to play against intelligent and unpredictable opponents.
Fever and Mission modes are slight variations on the original play model -- not only are you fighting to keep your screen clean but you'll also be racing against the clock.

The controls for Puyo Pop Fever are simple and intuitive: the D-Pad moves the puyo pieces, the A and B buttons rotate the pieces, and that’s it.
These puyos are colorless and can only be eliminated by destroying puyos adjacent to them, so while they’re not horribly difficult to get rid of, they quickly become cumbersome in large numbers.
The first, Fever, is essentially a challenge where you start and end in Fever Mode, constrained only by a time limit, and attempt to remain there as long as possible by creating chains and scoring big points.

Preview - Puyo Pop Fever // None /// Eurogamer
In addition to the classic Puyo Pop with no time limit or other distractions, players can now expect an opponent to contend with in most of the single-player modes and of course in the ever-addictive multiplayer game.
As well as manipulating Puyo into groups of four, this time you'll have to really consider chain-building (the art of vaporising large groups of Puyo with one carefully planned "pop"), because along with the expected big points total, you'll also be sending plenty of Nuisance Puyo over to your opponent's side of the screen.
When the Fever Count is full, the game kicks into the titular Fever Mode, in which readymade chains drop from the sky and have to be positioned to gather as many chain reactions as possible before the Fever Time runs out.

Fever shares a lot with many other puzzler games; Puyo blocks drop down from the screen, and players try to combine four in a row to send a nuisance Puyo over to their opponent until their screen fills up---you can also unleash chain combos for devastating effects.
Additional enhancements in Fever included larger quadruple Puyo clusters, a 16-character lineup (two of which are unlockable), four courses, Free Battle mode in single player, three default rule settings, the ability to edit rules for versus mode, and three Endless Puyo Pop "classic" games.

Activating the new easy-combo Fever Mode is an interesting concept, but it's a bit on the cheap side, while the variations on Endless mode provide the most fun in the single-player experience.
Due to the lack of a four-player mode and the fact that it is essentially the same game as the GBA version, Puyo Pop Fever isn’t for everyone.

Review - Puyo Pop Fever // PlayStation 2 /// Eurogamer
But Puyo Pop Fever obviously has more to it than just vanilla Puyo Pop.
Nuisance blocks won't fall until you fail to make a chain, and with each successful chain you neutralise a small amount of incoming nuisance, so theoretically a well-organised player can absorb plenty of punishment just by keeping a few readymade chains on the back burner to help him or her through troubled times.
The question then is whether Puyo Pop Fever is better than the legions of other multiplayer games available on the current crop of consoles, and the answer is that it compares very favourably.

New to Puyo Pop Fever is "Fever Mode." In a two player game against a human or the PC, when your opponent has made chain reactions and is about to send garbage blobs to your side, it'll warn you by showing dots at the top of your well.

At the heart of Puyo Pop Fever is a Tetris-based game that is truly addicting, fun and somewhat unique even though the Tetris influence is undeniable.
Puyo Pop is not the only game to copy the falling-block premise but it's one of the better games at disguising its origins so that it feels fresh.
Puyo Pop could be considered a lot more sophisticated and would probably see a lot more adult sales if it weren't presented in such a childish manner.

Puyo Pop Fever goes for cuteness over outstanding technical achievement in visuals, and judged by the standards of other puzzle games, it doesn't look bad at all.
As far as block or blob-based puzzlers go, Puyo Pop Fever is perfectly adequate, but the PSP happens to have a few better alternatives: Lumines offers a more classy experience, while Koloomn is a more original title, and one that will take every brain cell to master.

Now, in this school, every disagreement is solved by a match of Puyo Pop, which also appears to be the magic studied at the school, so every time you have defeated your opponent in the infamous game, you are faced with another, and another after that, all the while increasing the difficulty level.
For those of you that are unfamiliar with the concept of the Puyo Pop games, the goal is to connect four or more Puyos (little round oddlings with faces) of the same colour.
Connecting Puyos sends Nuisance Puyos to your opponent, whose board is shown on the right side of the screen, with yours on the left.
