Pwllheli has a much older history than Porthmadog and there has been a port at the mouth of the rivers Erch and Cymerau since mediaeval times.
The main sources are Emrys Hughes' List and Lewis Lloyd's "Pwllheli, the Port and Mart of Llyn".
This coincided with the boom in slate export from Porthmadog and Portdinorwig so from then to 1878 there was a flurry of shipbuilding and these fine, later vessels joined in with the slate and the Newfoundland salt cod trade.
