  Pyaasa: Guru Dutt's masterpiece
Pyaasa opens with a jobless poet Vijay (Guru Dutt) lying in the lap of Nature, which accepts him, unquestioning and non-judgemental.
Pyaasa works at two levels simultaneously -- it is an entertainer with an absorbing story as well as a cauterising comment on the commodification of people in the quest for success, money, and power.
She looks ethereal and transmutes the conflict of a woman torn between her materialistic aspirations and the calling of her heart with a haunted glance, a lowering of her eyes, or a faraway gaze.

There is a strong parallel between the hero, a poet, the outsider trying to make a place for himself in the society he inhabits and the director, the outsider, trying to leave his independent stamp in a world of formulaic cinema.
The song Hum Aapki Aankhon Mein is picturised amongst clouds as the heroine descends from the moon.
But if one person is the soul of Pyaasa it is lyricist Sahir Ludhianvi on whose poems the lyrics were based.

Pyaasa ("The Thirster") represents a high point in Indian cinema that, along with Mother India (also 1957) and major films by Raj Kapoor and Bimal Roy, confirms the 1950s as Hindi cinema's golden age.
Vijay's sensitivity and the world's indifference are established in a prologue depicting Vijay composing a poem in nature as he watches a bee flitting from flower to flower; suddenly, the bee is crushed by a passing stranger, the first in a series of innocents trodden under cruel heels throughout the film.
This sensitive tribute to Guru Dutt contains a fascinating chapter on Pyaasa, including the reminiscences of several close associates of the director.
