Pybba of Mercia - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Pybba (570?–606/15) (also Pibba, Wibba, Wybba) was an early King of Mercia.
Pybba, who is said by the Historia Brittonum to have had 12 sons, is also said to have been succeeded by Cearl, of unknown relationship.
Every king from Penda until Ceolwulf, who was deposed in 823, was said to be a descendant of Pybba, either through Penda, Eowa, or Coenwalh (perhaps excluding the short-lived Beornrad, whose background is unknown).

PYBBA OF MERCIA   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
Pybba (also Pibba, Wibba, Wybba) was king of Mercia, and father of Penda.
His dates are sometimes given in genealogies as birth 570, reign 593, and death either 606 or 615, but with no apparent evidence; the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle just mentions him as father of Penda, with no further detail.
Pybba is also said to have been succeeded by one Ceorl, of unknown relationship, who ruled until Penda took the throne in 626.

Penda   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
Penda, King of Mercia, son of Pybba, probably came to the throne in 626, but it is doubtful whether he actually became king of Mercia until 632-33, the year of the defeat and death of Edwin of Northumbria.
According to the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle he was eighty years old at his death, but the energy of his administration and the evidence with regard to the ages of his children and relatives render it almost impossible.
In 633 Penda and Ceadwalla oveithrew Edwin at Hatfield Chase; but after the defeat of the Welsh king at "Hefenfelth" in 634, Mercia seems to have been for a time subject to Northumbria.
