Pycnogonida - LoveToKnow 1911   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-03)
PYCNOGONIDA, or Pantopoda, marine Arachnida remarkable for the reduction of the opisthosoma or abdomen to an insignificant tubercular or rod-like process (whence their trivial name of "nobody crabs"), and for the development of the oral region into a relatively immense suctorial proboscis.
More important still is the circumstance that in the Pycnogonida there may be as many as seven pairs of leg-like limbs behind the mouth; but in the typical Arachnida there are never more than five such pairs.
Pycnogonida vary greatly in size, the span of legs when extended ranging from about 2 in.

Morphological phylogenetics of the sea spiders (Arthropoda: Pycnogonida).
Higher-level phylogenetic relationships among the lineages of sea spiders are investigated using 36 morphological characters from 37 species from all extant families and a Devonian pycnogonid fossil.
This is one of the first attempts to analyze the higher-level relationships of the Pycnogonida using cladistic techniques.

 Sea Spiders: Class Pycnogonida
Both of these may be absent as in the families Pycnogonidae and Endeidae.
In the Endeidae the chelifores are present in the juvenile stages but absent in the adults.
How the animals use their palps is not fully understood, but they are believed to have sensory equipment at their tips and in some cases are used to help the animal align the proboscis.

"A new Pycnogonum (Arthropoda; Pycnogonida: Pycnogonidae) from Hong Kong." \ul Systematics and Biodiversity\ulnone.\ A new species of pycogonid, of the genus Pycnogonum, is described from the sandy-mud benthos at 17 m depth in a submarine cave off eastern Hong Kong.
The classification follows Arnaud & Bamber (1987) and Green & MacQuitty (1987).\ The Pycnogonida are exclusively marine arthropods, forming a distinct class or sub-phylum presumed to have diverged from the chelicerate ancstral stock in the Cambrian.

Sea spider - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
This is not found anywhere else among arthopods except in some fossil forms like Anomalocaris, indicating the Pycnogonida may be a sister group to all other living arthropods having evolved from some ancestor that had lost the protocerebrum appendages.
If this is confirmed once and for all, it would mean the sea spiders are the last surviving (and highly modified) members of an ancient and long gone stem-group of arthropods that lived in the old Cambrian oceans.
A lucid view on relationships is given by Dunlop and Arango (2005), which treat the conflicting evidence for placing of the Pycnogonida 1) outside Arachnomopha as basal Euarthropoda, supporting the concept of Cormogonida (Euarthropoda excluding pycnogonids) or 2) inside Chelicerata (which is based only in the chelifore-chelicera putative homology).

Thus the affinities between Pycnogonida and Acari (mites and ticks), as found in phylogenetic analyses using mitochondrial genes, may rather be due to long-branch attraction and independently derived nucleotide composition and amino acid frequency, than to a real sister group relationship.
However, it was shown before that a reversal in strand bias seems not to be the cause for the affinity between Acari and Pycnogonida [13].
Thus from a mitogenomic point of view the exact phylogenetic position of Pycnogonida remains an open question, but a sister group relationship between Acari and Pycnogonida as suggested by Hassanin [13] is rather caused by long-branch attraction and higher AT content than to an underlying phylogenetic signal.
