Pye of Cambridge are known as a radio and television manufacturer and the Pye Record Label but in 1896 William George Pye started a part time business making scientific intruments while he was employed at the Cavendish Laboratory.
Pye had got very involved during the war and this certainly helped their progress after peace was established.
Pye enjoyed some very good years but unfortunately like so many of our British manufactures did not change with the times, they were slow to react to customer complaints and demands, then across the sea came a bigger threat.

The Pye Compagny originally sold televisions and radios and entered the record business when it bought Nixa Records in 1953.
In 1955, Polygon Records, a label that had been established by Clark's father to control distribution of her recordings, was added, leading to the official creation of Pye Nixa Records.
In 1959, the name was finally changed to Pye Records and ATV aquired 50% of the label.

The story of Pye in Waihi is explained simply with the determination and enthusiasm of Keith Wrigley who founded the Company in 1932, and with the vision of his successors.
PYE (N.Z.) Ltd acquired a controlling interest in Akrad and the Waihi factory embarked on the production of PYE’s domestic radios as well as the already established brands Pacific, Regent and Five Star, which continued to be marketed by G.A. Wooller and Co. Ltd.
In 1955 a further reconstruction of the PYE group in New Zealand took place when G.A.Wooller and Co. Ltd and Green and Cooper Ltd were both absorbed into the group and the company changed its name to PYE Ltd, Akrad remaining the group’s principal manufacturing unit.

 The Pye Museum of Pye Telecom Products and Company History: PTHG Home
The objectives of this project are to preserve the Pye Telecom Historic Collection, to accurately document the history of the Company and the development of the product portfolio of radio communications equipment, and to work towards the establishment of a public museum display of Pye equipment in the Cambridge area.
The core time period of Pye in radio communications is from 1939 to 2002, although the Pye group of companies dates from 1896, and some parts of the company are still trading under the names Sepura and Simoco.

Although Pye lived through the epidemic, perhaps falsely convinced that he was immune, two of his medical associates, Dr. Edward Heard and Dr. William Digges, died of the fever.
Equally disturbing was why Pye was only a “hospital steward,” dispensing prescriptions from the doctors, especially since Pye had a medical degree from a respected college, and some practicing physicians of that area were without degrees and had learned their vocation after serving apprenticeships to other physicians.

Pye didn't enter the record market in the UK until 1953 when it acquired a small independent label called Nixa which dealt mainly with continental recordings.
In 1955 the Polygon label was added to Pye's group, but it was the Pye Nixa imprint which was retained until 1959.
Pye jumped on the bandwagon of signing beat groups in 1963 with the signing of Liverpool's second biggest act, The Searchers, and they, together with Petula Clark, Jackie Trent, The Kinks, The Foundations and Status Quo kept Pye in the charts for most of the 60s.
