Factors that affect hatching asynchrony in the chinstrap penguin (Pygoscelis antarctica)
We examined if laying intervals and hatching asynchronies are related in a chinstrap penguin (Pygoscelis antarctica) population in the South Orkneys.
The lack of association between the two variables, as well as data on brood patch development, indicated that incubation did not begin immediately after the first egg was laid.

Pygoscelis which means rump legged and Papua which refers to Papua, New Guinea although there are no penguins to be found at this location.
Two distinct subspecies: Pygoscelis Papua Papua found on the sub-Antarctic islands and Pygoscelis Papua ellsworthii, the smaller subspecies, found on the Antarctic peninsula and neighboring islands.
The colonies are seldom located in the same spot from year to year because by the end of one breeding season the bird's nesting activities have destroyed the vegetation and therefore they move to greener areas the following season.

Digimorph - Pygoscelis adeliae (Adelie penguin)
The Adelie penguin (Pygoscelis adeliae) is by far the most well studied of all penguins, even though it resides solely in Antarctica (whose Adélie Land gave the birds their name) and various Southern Ocean Islands (the South Shetlands, South Orkneys, Bouvet, Balleny, and Peter Islands).
Relationships within penguins are also controversial and largely unresolved, although the six living genera almost certainly form natural groups.

Gentoo Penguin - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Gentoo Penguin (Pygoscelis papua) is easily recognised by the wide white stripe extending like a bonnet across the top of its head.
They are the fastest underwater swimming penguins, reaching speeds of 36 km/h.
Two sub-species of this penguin are recognised: Pygoscelis papua papua and the smaller Pygoscelis papua ellsworthii.

 Pygoscelis
Pygoscelis penguins are found mostly in the higher latitudes of the sub-Antarctic and the Antarctic.
Of the three, Gentoo Penguins have the most northerly distribution and occur on most of the sub-Antarctic islands.
There are a few colonies on the South Shetland Islands where the distributions of all three Pygoscelis species overlap and they breed together.

Juveniles are very similar to adults, but the white eye-patch is not connected to their white eye-rings until they moult at an age of 14 months.
Colonies are usually smaller than those of other Pygoscelis penguins and are less densely packed.
In the sub-Antarctic the nests are often found amongst tussocks, whereas on the Antarctic Peninsula they nest on stony ice-free areas and beaches.

ABANDONED PENGUIN COLONIES AND CLIMATE CHANGE
Six abandoned colonies of Adelie penguin (Pygoscelis adeliae) were excavated near Palmer Station, Anvers Island, Antarctic Peninsula, to investigate the occupation history of this species.
Sediments excavated from each site were sifted through fine-mesh screens and produced abundant fish bones and otoliths and squid beaks that represent prey remains deposited by penguins during the nesting period.
All penguin bones recovered from the abandoned colonies were identified as Pygoscelis sp.

They are: (I) Aptenodytes, easily recognized by its long and thin bill, slightly decurved, from wh4ch Pygoscelis, as M. Watson has shown, is hardly distinguishable; (2) Eudyptes, in which the bill is much shorter and rather broad; and (3) Spheniscus, in which the shortish bill is compressed and the maxilla ends in a conspicuous hook.
Three others belong also to this genus, if Pygoscelis be not recognized, but they seem not to require any particular remark.
Eudyptes, containing the crested penguins, known to sailors as Rock-hoppers or Macaronis, would appear to have five species, and Spheniscus four, among which S. mendiculus, which occurs in the Galapagos, and therefore has the most northerly range of the whole group, alone needs notice here.

The accession of Don Pygoscelis II signified a return to crime in a big way: citizens of Loathing everywhere were kneecapped without any way to fight against it, and their familiars and friends too.
Don Pygoscelis I's "civilized arrangement" was over: the new age of Don Pygoscelis II had begun, the treaty with the Council of Loathing broken: the order of the day was to be violence, rule of the strong, crushing of the weak, treachery, and the positive encouragement of the worst in human nature...

As the climate and extent of sea ice changes in the area, population size of the different penguin species changes dramatically.
During the last twenty years, climate warming at the Antarctic Peninsula has caused species that depend on open water such as Chinstrap (Pygoscelis antarctica) and Gentoo (Pygoscelis papua) penguins to become more abundant, while the population size of ice-dependent Adelie penguins (Pygoscelis adeliae) has declined.

Four species breed regularly, king penguins (Aptenodytes patagonicus), chinstrap penguins (Pygoscelis adeliae), gentoo penguins (Pygoscelis papua) and macaroni penguins (Eudyptes chrysolophus) whilst rockhopper penguins (Eudyptes chrysocome) which are seldom recorded are thought to breed in small numbers.
One pair of Adelie penguins (Pygoscelis adeliae) have also bred at South Georgia.
