  Irreversible Cell Injury - Discussion
pyknosis, karyorrhexis and karyolysis) and cell membranes are disrupted the cell is on the path to irreversible injury and death.
In heart muscle, episodes of ischemia or reduced blood flow, if of short duration, may produce periods of pain and shortness of breath (angina), but if prolonged will result in death of the cardiac muscle cells and heart attack or myocardial infarction.
These changes are not exclusive to circulatory failure due to heart falure, but may also occur in many other conditions, e.g.

The normal lobular architecture is distorted by portal expansion, because of fibrosis, cholangiolar proliferation and a mild to moderate mixed inflammatory cell infiltrate.
Bile duct infiltration and damage by lymphocytes is easily seen, and there is fairly widespread atrophy and pyknosis of the biliary epithelium.
This should be reflected in fairly significant elevations of the gamma glutamyltranspeptidase and alkaline phosphatase.

There is, however, widespread bile duct atrophy and pyknosis.
In addition, there is a decrease in bile ducts; in total, there are 13 triads and at least five are devoid of bile ducts.
In this case, I would favor a diagnosis of chronic rejection because of the widespread nature of the bile duct atrophy and pyknosis, the portal tract collagenization, the bile duct loss and the relative paucity of periductal edema.

Although the alterations in Busan-exposed shrimp were generally more pronounced, the antennal glands of 32 out 36 experimental shrimp exhibited abnormalities that were manifested primarily as increased secretory activity by the labyrinth cells.
In dithiocarbamate-exposed shrimp with 'fl gills,' the labyrinth epithelium exhibited moderate nuclear hypertrophy, apparent cell sloughing, intense secretory activity, and occasional melanized lesions; alterations in the antennal gland coelomosac included nuclear pyknosis, a general deterioration of podocyte organization, and an unusual increase in hemolymph density adjacent to affected tissues.
This study suggests that some of the observed abnormal/pathological changes are the indirect consequence of branchial degeneration.

apoptosis but not necrosis - ValueMD Medical Schools Forum
Necrosis is a word that describes the morphological changes that occur to a cell after its death.
These include the following: (1) cellular swelling (2) denaturation of cytoplasmic proteins (gives rise to eosinophilia) (3) breakdown of cell organelles (4) a sequence of nuclear changes which include (a) karyolysis (b) pyknosis (c) karyorrhexis.
pyknosis is the first thing that happens and is characterized by nuclear shrinkage (the word "pyknosis" reminds me of my pinky finger, the smallest finger, and so that is how I remember that pyknosis referst to nuclear shrinkage).
