The village of Pyla is situated on the southern and eastern part of Cyprus.
Encircled on three sides by hills and elevated somewhat from the sea level, it faces the Mediterranean sea, giving it a spectacular view of the bay of Larnaca and the whole coastal line that begins from Larnaca towards the west and stretching to Cape Pyla in the east.
The greater area of Pyla village stretches from the southern coast to the hills overlooking it to the north and beyond.

Pyla (Πύλα in Greek) quite possibly meaning "gate" from the Greek "pyli" (πύλη).
This name is assumed to have been taken to reflect the fact that the village used to be the only road leading inland to the Mesaoria plain from the coastal areas.
It is said that during the ancient times Pyla Village was not at its present location.

In a symbolic action the demonstrators barred the military runway at Dhekelia for an hour and using white paint they wrote on the asphalt roadway of the air lane "NO WAR" so that the pilots can see it when landing their fighter planes.
When the demonstrators entered Pyla the villagers, Greeks and Turks, cheered them and some of them joined the march.
However, that was a very significant political event since it was the first time in many decades that Turkish and Greek Cypriots took part in a demonstration.
