Quiz shows like the $64,000 Question and Twenty-One were extremely successful, until it was discovered the producers were giving out the answers ahead of time. Academy Award winner Robert Redford brilliantly depicted this scandal in American History in his Oscar winning film "Quiz Show".
Other popular TV game shows created during this time included "This is your Life" with celebrities like Marilyn Monroe, Bob Hope, Jack Benny, "What's My Line" with panelists that included Desi Arnaz and Arlene Francis, "Queen for a Day" "I've Got a Secret" and the "Price is Right".
Game shows have remained a huge source of entertainment, and are still a major part of pop culture.

Pyramid (game show) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Pyramid was an American television game show where contestants tried to guess a series of words or phrases, based on descriptions that were given to them, in the shortest amount of time.
On January 19, 1976, the show was renamed The $20,000 Pyramid.
By 1980, The $20,000 Pyramid was the last remaining network daytime game show among the three commercial broadcast networks then to be produced and videotaped in New York City.

In the $20K and $25K versions of the show, one subject during the show had hidden behind it a "Big 7." This was a bonus card which would win $500 for the player if the team managed to get all 7 words in under 30 seconds.
The game went to the team that scored the most points, OR got the same score in a faster time (in the case of perfect 7's.) Another bonus was enabled if the game went to a 21-21 tie; the player that broke the tie won an extra $5,000.
The only truly forgettable run of the show was the $50K version; with a discombobulated format and lower payoffs, it really seemed more like a potboiler than a legitmate attempt at a game show.

The most fascinating part of the show was its gigantic set (the series originally taped in the Ed Sullivan Theater, which now houses The Late Show with David Letterman, except for a few weeks in Los Angeles), which included a large hunk of plywood on the main pyramid.
On January 19, 1976, the daytime show became The $20,000 Pyramid, whereupon the first time a contestant went to the Winner’s Circle it was worth $10,000, the second trip was worth $15,000, and all subsequent trips were worth $20,000.
And all of the CBS $25,000 Pyramid and syndicated $100,000 Pyramid episodes remain.

Good game shows are ones where the contestants are having fun, and you don't have to form any kind of emotional attachment to the contestants.
Now the classic shows are returning to the network, only one original remains (Lingo, one of only three good ones that they had, along with Hollywood Showdown and Russian Roulette), and the non game show programming is being cut back rapidly, with only a few gambling shows on every once in a while.

The show also now had a brand-new set duplicating the original Jim Ryan design created for the first CBS version, but there were some minor differences between the two of them, and it was tailored made to fit within the confining pattern of this new studio’s layout.

The Pyramid Game Show's Years In New York City (by William A. Padron)
On Monday, January 16, 1978, "The $20,000 Pyramid" moved into the 12:00 noon (Eastern) slot on ABC-TV with a special set of seven shows presenting in a somewhat first roundrobin elimination tournament-style format (and only for this version) featuring past champions with their celebrity partners to compete for an additional cash prize of $20,000.
Meanwhile, the previous ABC daytime "$20,000 Pyramid" version wins its third Daytime Emmy Award as "Outstanding Game/Audience Participation Program" during its eighth annual national ceremonies telecast hosted by Dick Clark on Thursday, May 21, 1981 (I was personally hoping the show would win that trophy as I was watching it on that date).
The New York era of the "Pyramid" game show (and the entire genre from the city itself along with the syndicated "To Tell The Truth" during its brief 1980-81 season) essentially concluded in 1981 after a great eight-year run.
