The first festival I attended was '74, I certainly remember the can fights and the random shouts of 'Wally', not for the band I might add, but it was a tradition in concert halls and arenas in the 70's.
I was in the middle of the arena, a pyramid of empty party 7 cans (remember them) had been built at the back of the arena so logically those at the front tried to demolish it with empty (sometimes half full) smaller cans.
festival can complain, as they know exactly what they're getting; the acts as advertised at the times promised and an atmosphere, authoritarian certainly, but reliable and orderly.

Festivals always produce at least one surprise success and this year it was portly
yes it was held over a bank holiday, and yes, too, by the time the festival was in full swing it was clearly evident that the hippie dream was well and truly done and dusted.
From this evidence I think we can presume that much of the festival was recorded professionally and the tapes are probably quietly moldering away in a vault.

The water for that festival came from water trucks we hired from the local water board, they came to £30 each, which was paid from collections we made.

As I write this, Glastonbury Festival is underway, blessed once more by some fine weather after two rain-lashed, washed-out affairs which, thanks to the forces of nature, evolved into yet another of the species … the mud fest.
You couldn’t move last year for TV footage of drug-crazed (or, more probably, merely crazed) Glastonbury revellers, as they frollicked in their communal mud bath for the benefit of the cameras while their mums watched at home, horrified at the thought of all that laundry.
Most, if not all, festivals are made of such moments, as well as the dodgy toilets, dodgy weather, dodgy music … yes, over-priced grub, and the guy in front of you who hoists his girlfriend onto his shoulders so you can’t see anything but PA equipment.

The festival's promoters added: "While we are disappointed to lose Limp Bizkit on Sunday at Download we still know that fans are up for the first ever full blown multi-day, multi-stage rock festival at Donington."
