The Shire is the third fastest growing non-metropolitan municipality in the State and is predicted to be the second fastest by the year 2000.
Approximately 80% of the Shire’s population lives in the 10% of the Shire that is classed as urban, while the remaining population is unevenly dispersed throughout the remaining area within some 50 plus townships, small communities and rural areas.

Pyrenees Shire is covered by planning schemes under the Planning and Environment Act 1987, which set out requirements for the use, development and subdivision of all land.
The Pyrenees Planning Scheme (12th November 1998) is the instrument by which the use and development of land within the Shire is controlled with the object of ensuring orderly and economic growth of the community.

 General History of the Pyrenees
The area now generally referred to as the Pyrenees was inhabited by and exploited by Aboriginal people from at least 13 000 years ago.
The miners extended their interest west to the foothills of the Pyrenees where in the last months of 1854 gold was found at Sardine Gully, Middle Creek, Warrenmang and at Fiddlers Creek.
Timber and sheep were the mainstay of the region for most of the twentieth century that saw a general decline in the population and wealth of the area.

The grains industry has volunteered to pay the Pyrenees shire in Western Victoria, for upgrading of a local road heavily trafficked by grain trucks.
Under this mass management system, the money raised will go towards the road upgrade which will benefit both industry and the shire.
The below average state of this major road has been under severe criticism by local farmers and industry for years, but now the problem could be solved.

Area and Location Description: Wannon covers an area of approximately 33 854 sq km from the southern coastline of Victoria, to the northern boundaries of Glenelg Shire, Southern Grampians Shire and Pyrenees Shire and takes in the southern part of the Northern Grampians Shire.
From the South Australian border the division extends to the eastern boundaries of Pyrenees Shire and Corangamite Shire at which point it also includes a small section of the Colac-Otway Shire.
