Pyridostigmine tablets may also be used by the military before an anticipated threat of exposure to certain nerve gas agents.
Pyridostigmine tablets are only to be used prior to exposure to Soman.

Pyridostigmine bromide is a chemical which enhances the effectiveness of established drugs for the treatment of nerve agent poisoning.
Pyridostigmine is also approved to reverse the effect of neuromuscular blocking agents after surgery.
The researchers indicated that pyridostigmine should not be given to individuals who had bronchial asthma, peptic ulcer, liver, kidney, heart disease, or hypersensitivity to pyridostigmine or related drugs.

Pyridostigmine bromide is a chemical which enhances the effectiveness of two drugs, atropine and 2-PAM, which are proven effective for the treatment of nerve agent poisoning.
Pyridostigmine bromide, according to DOD, improves the survival of animals exposed to soman and treated with atropine and 2-PAM.
Pyridostigmine is approved by the FDA at a one-time dosage of 15 mg to reverse the effects of certain drugs given during anesthesia.

FDA and DOD officials claimed they were confident of the safety of pyridostigmine as an antidote enhancer for chemical warfare protection because it would be used at a much lower dose (Note 50) in combat than normally used for treating patients with myasthenia gravis.
Whereas the dosage of pyridostigmine bromide for patients with myasthenia gravis may reach 120 mg every three hours, (Note 51) the dose for U.S. troops was only 30 mg every 8 hours.
John Deutch, Deputy Secretary of Defense, wrote that, "Although pyridostigmine and botulinum toxoid were classified as investigational drugs as required by FDA regulations, they were not used for experimental purposes in [Operation Desert Storm] and the military personnel who received these products were not experimental subjects." (Note 95) Mr.

Pyridostigmine bromide (PB) is a drug the Food and Drug Administration approved in 1955 to treat myasthenia gravis, a neuromuscular condition characterized by weakness and muscle fatigue.
Based on extensive scientific information, the FDA approved using pyridostigmine bromide as an "investigational new drug" as a pretreatment adjunct to protect US and some allied military personnel from death in a chemical warfare agent attack using soman.
In 1999, the RAND Corporation released a report indicating pyridostigmine bromide could not be ruled out as a contributor to the development of some Gulf War veterans' unexplained or undiagnosed illnesses.

In 1998, the IOM began a series of congressionally-mandated studies to examine the scientific and medical literature on the potential health effects of chemical and biological agents related to the Gulf War.
The first study reviewed the scientific literature on depleted uranium, chemical warfare agents (sarin and cyclosarin), pyridostigmine bromide, and vaccines (anthrax and botulinum toxoid) and resulted in the report, Gulf War and Health Volume I: Depleted Uranium, Pyridostigimine Bromide, Sarin, Vaccines.

There are several studies of the effects of a one-time dose of pyridostigmine on growth hormone in women, but the conditions of these studies, including fasting and use during one phase of the menstrual cycle, were not relevant to use of pyridostigmine in the Gulf War.
All the men and women in the study were between 19-25 years old, were free of other medications, and were fasting; the women were all in the luteal phase of their menstrual cycle.
