NASA: Atmospheres - CANCELLED - June 10, 2005 - Lab Seminar, Eric Jensen
Recent measurements in pyrocumulus cloud updrafts have shown that numerous smoke particles produced by the fires lead to increased concentrations of cloud droplets, narrowed droplet size distributions, and delayed precipitation compared to deep convection in unpolluted regions.
The delayed initiation of warm rain in pyrocumulus clouds must allow more water mass to reach altitudes where droplets freeze and, consequently, greater release of latent heat when freezing occurs.
The heights to which deep convection penetrate are critically important for the water budgets in both the tropopause layer and the upper troposphere in general.
