Pyromania (album) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Pyromania is the third album by British hard rock band Def Leppard, released in 1983.
The album is credited for paving the way for a new generation of hard rock bands in the 80's, and set the standard for albums of the genre through its combination of multi-layered vocal harmonies and heavy guitar riffs.
Pyromania was the last album by the band to be considered a "heavy metal" album, but still ranks high on many Top Metal Album lists.

Rick's remarkable comeback and the album's immediate vaulting success on both sides of the Atlantic meant that the 'Hysteria' tour, which kicked off with a string of UK dates, was propelled from within by optimism.
By the time they came to make their next album, though, the antiseptic 'Adrenalize', the joke was now on them, as the onset of grunge and the absence of Mutt as producer contrived to put the band into a critical zone they'd never even heard of before: the one marked Old And Dated.
With three albums that turned a bunch of scruffy, know-it-all teenagers from Sheffield into the biggest, most musically forward-thinking rock band of their time, Mutt felt he had taken it as far as he could.

Pyromania spawned the hits "Foolin'", "Photograph" and the humongous "Rock Of Ages", the latter of which set the standard for metal and hard rock videos, specifically the writhing and chained virgin who could only be released by ROCK.
The album didn't move much at first, due in part to the long delay, but also because critics felt the album was laying the pop cheese on a little too thick, abandoning Def Leppard's metal ancestry.
The album managed to be great for the entire "hair metal" genre, which had faltered a bit in favor of less pop-friendly fare like Guns ‘N' Roses.

While Def Leppard had obviously wanted to write big-sounding anthems on their previous records, Pyromania was where the band's vision coalesced and gelled into something more.
More than ever before, the band's songs on Pyromania are driven by catchy, shiny melodic hooks instead of heavy guitar riffs, although the latter do pop up once in a while.
Leppard's quest for huge, transcendent hard rock perfection on Pyromania was surprisingly successful; their reach never exceeded their grasp, which makes the album an enduring (and massively influential) classic.

Pyromania sees DL at the height of their pop/metal powers just before the pop sound would take over on the albums that followed.
To give this album more of an "edge" over the current rock competition, DL brings back producer Robert John "Mutt" Lange (that's right, High And Dry was his first time producing for DL, NOT PYROMANIA), and sends the band into the studio working hard for about a year.
The band never sounded better and this was the last album for a while that drummer Rick Allen would play an acoustic kit on as he hadn't had his tragic 1984 car wreck yet in which he would lose his left arm.
