Pyrometer - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A pyrometer is a temperature measuring device, which may consist of several different arrangements.
A simple type of pyrometer uses a thermocouple placed either in the furnace or on the item to be measured.
One of the most common non-contact pyrometers is the absorption-emission pyrometer which is a thermometer for determining gas temperature from measurement of the radiation emitted by a calibrated reference source before and after this radiation has passed through and been partially absorbed by the gas.

FAR Associates: A New Type of Pyrometer Solves Classic Problems
This novel pyrometer addresses the range from 500 to beyond 3500°C. It is claimed to require no prior knowledge of the target, including the emissivity, to yield extremely accurate temperature determinations.
Concern over emissivity cancellation affects the design of ratio pyrometers: the closer together the wavelengths are chosen, the more likely the emissivities are to cancel; the farther apart, the larger the magnitude of the resultant signal, and the greater the precision.
Despite the absorptions, the new pyrometer measured the temperature accurately; this was verified later by purging the offgas.

 pyrometer
In a radiation pyrometer the emitted radiation is detected by a sensor such as a thermocouple.
In an optical pyrometer the colour of an electrically heated filament is matched visually to that of the emitted radiation.
Pyrometers are especially useful for measuring the temperature of distant, moving, or inaccessible objects.

 Pyrometer
Pyrometers are used to demonstrate, and sometimes measure, the amount by which a metal rod expands as it is heated.
The right end of the rod is fixed, and the left end actuates a lever mechanism which amplifies the motion and causes a needle to swing around the semicircular scale.
The pyrometer at the right was made by Max Kohl of Chemnitz in Germany, and was purchased by the College of Wooster in Ohio about 1900.

Multiwavelength Pyrometer for Elevated Temperatures in Aerospace Applications
The multiwavelength pyrometer temperature is obtained from a radiation spectrum recorded over a broad wavelength region by transforming it into a straight line segment(s) (as shown in the graph) in part or all of the spectral region.
Implicit in a two-color pyrometer is the assumption of wavelength-independent emissivity.
However, a multiwavelength pyrometer not only has improved accuracy but also confirms that the wavelength-independent emissivity assumption is valid when a multitude of data points are shown to lie on a simple straight line.
