Pears are trees of the genus Pyrus and the fruit of that tree, edible in some species.
Three are important for edible fruit production, the European Pear Pyrus communis cultivated mainly in Europe and North America, the Ya Pear Pyrus bretschneideri, and the Nashi Pear Pyrus pyrifolia (also known as Asian Pear or Apple Pear), both grown mainly in eastern Asia.
The Willow-leafed Pear (Pyrus salicifolia) is grown for its attractive slender, densely silvery-hairy leaves.

 Pyrus malus
Pyrus floribunda is a native of Japan, and though it grows into a small tree it is more often met with as a large bush.
Pyrus prunifolia is a native of Siberia, and is very closely related to Pyrus baccata, the principal difference being that the calyx lobes of this are retained on the fruit until it falls, while in the case of baccata they are very early deciduous.
Pyrus Ringo is a native of Japan, and is showy when in blossom, and again when covered with its small, yellow fruits in autumn.

The Quinces differ from the Pyrus genus in the twisted manner in which the petals are arranged in the bud and in the many-celled ovary, in which the numerous ovules are disposed horizontally, not vertically as in the Pears.
The Japanese Quince, familiar in our gardens, and formerly known as Pyrus Japonica, now usually described as Cydonia Japonica, is grown for the sake of its blossoms, which vary in colour from creamy white to rich red and are produced during the winter and early spring months.

A number of different cultivars (cultivated varieties) are available, so you may see rounded and spreading trees, or upright "fastigiate" forms, but they always have oval to deltoid, glossy leaves, whose margins are slightly undulate (wavy), and have small, rounded teeth, with not a bristle to be seen.
One person noted that Pyrus ussuriensis should have bristle-toothed leaf margins, and remarked that they could be clearly seen in the sample he had sent.
The name Pyrus ussuriensis first appeared in the records of Quarantine in 1965, but we have no way of knowing what was brought in to Australia under that name.
