 PEAR
The common pear (Pyrus communis) is one of the earliest cultivated of fruit trees, both in its native West Asia and in Europe.
Most of the pear strains grown for their sweet and juicy fruit are varieties of Pyrus communis or of its hybrids with other species of Pyrus, usually Pyrus pyrifolia, known as the Japanese, Chinese, or sand pear, and indigenous to China.
The main use of the sand pear today is as a rootstock in pear orchards; the quince is also of the same family and is used as a rootstock.

The European cultivars mainly belong to Pyrus communis and Pyrus nivalis, whereas the Asian cultivars belong to five important species; Pyrus pyrifolia, Pysus ussuriensis, Pyrus pashia, Pyrus calleryana, and Pyrus betulaefolia.
These cultivars that belong to Pyrus pyrifolia are known as sand pears due to the presence of stone cells in the flesh of the fruit.
Since Pyrus pyrifolia is native to Central and Southern China and Japan, the cultivars derived from this species can be successfully grown in the countries which have similar environmental conditions of the above two countries.

ADAPTABILITY AND USE OF INTRODUCED CULTIVARS OF PYRUS PYRIFOLIA NAKAI IN GANSU PROVINCE OF CHINA
It is based on the investigation and study of the growth, fruit habit, phenophase, fruit economic character and the resistances to freezing injury, late frost, drought, salt damage, etc. of 50 cultivars of Pyrus pyrifolia Nakai including 28 pear cultivars of Japan.
Because of the low temperature, aridity and late frost in the middle part, Hexi corridor and southwest part of Gansu province, the branches are easily damaged during winter and the flower organs are easy to be damaged by late frost.
Because of the characteristics of early fruit-bearing and good quality, the cultivars of Pyrus pyrifolia Nakai especially pear cultivars of Japan are thought to be the ideal parents to breed good cultivars of pear, to which close attention will be paid in the 21st century.

Pyrus communis L. (European pear) and Pyrus serotina L. (formerly Pyrus pyrifolia L) or Asian pear are the two main types cultivated around the world.
Although the European types are those that most consumers and gardeners are familiar with, Asian pears are really making a strong emergence into garden centers and retail produce markets.
The European pear (Pyrus communis L.) is not a native and is believed to have sprung from the early breeding of Pyrus caucasia and Pyrus nivalis.

They are primarily selections derived from Pyrus ussuriensis (Ussuri pear) and Pyrus serotina (Japanese sand pear, formerly Pyrus pyrifolia) or complex hybrids of the two species.
In Alabama, European pears are grown to a very limited degree because of their high susceptibility to fire blight, which is a bacterial disease caused by Erwinia amylovora.
Because it imparts greater fire blight resistance to varieties budded onto it, in addition to other desirable characteristics, Pyrus calleryana is the preferred rootstock for Asian pears grown in the Southeast.
