I have worked on this manuscript for six years, and I am now very happy with it the way it is. I don't want to invest more time in it and risk having the agent reject it.
My manuscript was rejected by an editor who said that my characters were "flat," but he didn’t explain what that means or how to correct it.
When characters are "flat" it means that they lack depth, that their motivations are not clear, that they are dull or uninteresting, and that they need "fleshing out." When you first create your characters, particularly a key character, create a life for that person in the form of a bio.

The Case Against Q: Ten Reasons
Current literature on Q abounds with editions of Q, investigations into its strata, studies of the communities that were behind it and analyses of their theology.
For a while it was thought that 'the logia' to which Papias referred might be Q. Indeed, this was one of the planks on which the Q hypothesis rested in the nineteenth century.

Library of America: Gertrude Stein: Writings 1903-1932
Collation of the holograph manuscript (now in the Beinecke Library) and the first book edition reveals significant differences of a kind suggesting that Stein revised the text before the first publication.
However, these lines do appear in the manuscript notebook, suggesting that Stein made later corrections, either to the galleys or to a second typescript that is not known to be extant.
The holograph manuscript notebook, however, suggests that the piece was intended to be set as poetry, since each stanza is written on its own page with line breaks that correspond with those in the first book edition.

Chicago Manual of Style - Q & A - Manuscript Preparation   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-04)
For most of the twentieth century, typewriters ensured that manuscripts were typically prepared in a fixed-width typeface resembling, for example, Courier New.
Most of our rules on punctuation and capitalization apply to all writing, and we do include recommendations for styling such things as direct and indirect discourse, but the “nuts and bolts” information about publishing and editing is primarily geared toward nonfiction articles and books.
But since CMS is geared toward the preparation of manuscripts for publication, which usually means that the manuscript will go to a typesetter in the form of an electronic file, we cannot advise adding the extra space, which might show up in the published document as (guess what?) an extra space.
