Quasi-biennial oscillation - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The QBO (quasi-biennial oscillation) is a quasi-periodic oscillation of the equatorial zonal wind between easterlies and westerlies in the tropical stratosphere with a mean period of 28 to 29 months.
The QBO was discovered in the 1950s, but its cause remained unclear for some time.
Effects of the QBO include mixing of stratospheric ozone by the secondary circulation caused by the QBO, modification of monsoon precipitation, and an influence on stratospheric circulation in northern hemisphere winter (the sudden stratospheric warmings).

When looking at the extent of the QBO in latitude on a pressure surface plot, Figs 2(a) and 2(b), the strong seasonal cycle around 60 degrees north and south is readily seen.

6) The QBO is thought to affect the Sahel rainfall pattern and is used in forecasts for the region.

Our results show that it is possible to generate a realistic-looking QBO with various combinations of drag from the two types of waves, but there are some constraints on the wave input spectra and amplitudes.
With an appropriate choice of wave input parameters, it is possible to obtain a QBO with a realistic period and to which both types of waves contribute.
In recent years, it has been observed that, in order to simulate the QBO accurately, general circulation models require parameterized gravity wave drag, in addition to the drag from resolved planetary-scale waves; and that even if the planetary wave amplitudes are incorrect, the gravity wave drag can be adjusted to compensate.

QBO   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-31)
The Quasi-Biennial Oscillation (QBO)is an east-west oscillation in stratospheric winds above the equator with a period ranging between 22 to 32 months. The different phases of the QBO are known to be associated with shifts in the number and intensity of tropical cyclones and with temperature and precipitation extremes at the earth 's surface.
The putative cause is a reduction in upper atmospheric shear off the equator during westerly phases of the QBO.

Quasi-biennial oscillation signatures in ozone and temperature observed by lidar at Mauna Loa, Hawaii ...
The QBO signature in temperature maximizes at 35 km (5 K amplitude) and is seasonally synchronized (winter) and out of phase with the expected signature at the equator.
The clearest QBO signature in stratospheric ozone maximizes near 31 km and is also seasonally synchronized in late winter-early spring and is out of phase with the expected equatorial ozone QBO anomaly.
These QBO anomalies identified in ozone and temperature are highly consistent with the previously observed and modeled QBO anomalies assuming that Hawaii is located in the subtropical branch of the asymmetrical QBO-induced meridional circulation.

Hence it appears that the meridional circulation of the QBO modelled by SLIMCAT is not symmetrical about the equator for the descending westerly phase during northern hemisphere winter.
The QBO also affects the isentropic transport, and this can be seen from the timeseries of tropical effective diffusivity (Figure 5) note the vertical axis is potential temperature).
This QBO modulation of the isentropic stirring is particularly evident around the 550K isentrope (where the QBO easterlies persist for a longer time).

QBO as potential amplifier of solar cycle influence
We discuss a 3D study in which we simulate the QBO under the influence of the SC.
This model produces in the lower stratosphere a relatively large modulation of the QBO, which appears to come from the SC and qualitatively agrees with the observations.
The modulation of the QBO, with constant phase relative to the SC, is shown to persist at least for 50 years, and it is induced by a SC modulated annual oscillation that is hemispherically symmetric and confined to low latitudes (Mayr et al., 2005).

A two-and-a-half-dimensional interactive stratospheric model, whose equatorial zonal wind was relaxed toward the observed Singapore zonal wind, was able to reproduce much of the observed quasi-biennial oscillation (QBO) variability in the column ozone, in its vertical distribution in the low and middle latitudes, and also in the high southern polar latitudes.
Unlike the classic picture of a nonseasonal two-cell QBO circulation symmetric about the equator, a more correct picture is a direct QBO circulation that is strongly seasonal, driven by the seasonality in diabatic heating, which is very weak in the summer hemisphere and strong in the winter hemisphere at low and midlatitudes.
During spring in the modeled northern polar region, chaotic behavior is another important source of interannual variability, in addition to the interannual variability of planetary wave sources in the troposphere previously studied by the authors.

The equatorial QBO is one of the most extraordinary and far-reaching circulation features of the atmosphere.
The central objective of this activity is to examine the role of both natural and anthropogenic forcing on the variability of the QBO.
While the variations in zonal wind associated with the QBO are confined to the tropical stratosphere, the strength and magnitude of the subtropical zero wind line appears to modulate the large scale structure of planetary scale disturbances in the middle and high latitudes.

An important natural fluctuation observed in the stratosphere is the quasi-biennial oscillation (QBO) of temperatures, winds and trace gases (including ozone), however the mechanism driving this mode of stratospheric variabilty is not yet fully understood.
Since a quasi-biennial oscillation is also detected in tides, the occurence of huricanes and variations in sea-surface temperature, the SPARC SSG follows with close interest research on the stratospheric QBO and its potential influence on tropospheric climate.
A review of these scientific issues is available in the SPARC Implementation Plan.

The first is the so-called `quasi-biennial oscillation' (QBO), observed since the early 1950s in the equatorial lower stratosphere, when the operational meteorological network became sufficiently developed.
The east-west winds reverse direction roughly every fourteen months, throughout a belt encircling the globe, a remarkable example of order out of chaos and long-term predictability -- and regarding causal mechanisms a total enigma for nearly two decades, whose solution began to emerge only in the 1960s, when I was a graduate student.
