CERN Courier - QCD comes to the home of Goe - IOP Publishing - article
In the small-Bjorken-x region, unravelling the interplay of effects arising from Balitsky, Fadin, Kuraev and Lipatov (BFKL) theory for radiative corrections to parton scattering, and the QCD evolution equations of Dokshitzer, Gribov, Lipatov, Altarelli and Parisi (DGLAP), is a challenge to theorists.
In deep-inelastic scattering, HERA has measured the transition from QCD parton physics at large momentum transfer to photoproduction at zero momentum transfer, and theorists are trying to analyse the onset of nonperturbative effects.
The investigation of the transition in QCD from perturbative to nonperturbative physics is likely to remain a point of interest for the next few years.

 QCD
Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) is the theory of the strong interaction and how quarks and gluons interact with themselves and each other.
Gluons are the particles that mediate the force (the strong interaction) in QCD.
In QCD similar higher order graphs with virtual loops also play an important role in determining the strength of the interaction as a function of distance scale.

 Solving QCD
QCD, the fundamental theory of quarks and gluons that explains the internal structure and interactions of protons and neutrons, can only be solved numerically, using Monte Carlo simulations.
Until two years ago it was universally accepted that such simulations were possible only on massively parallel supercomputers capable of teraflops-scale calculations; tens of millions of dollars have been invested in the US, Europe and Japan to develop and acquire machines for this purpose.
During the past decade, numerical QCD has come to be dominated by a small number of large international collaborations built around very large and costly computing facilities.

Perturbative QCD has proven to be remarkably successful in describing hard hadronic reactions in which the associated transverse momentum scale is very large.
Consequently a universally quantitative understanding of hadronic phenomena, be it structure or dynamics, in terms of QCD has proved frustratingly illusive.
To date much of the data can still be fit only by employing the phenomenological approach, based at best on the analytical properties of hadronic scattering amplitudes, whose relationship to QCD is in most cases unclear and unresolved and which dates back to the 1960s.

4.3.3 QCD   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-19)
QCD is an example of a ``gauge theory.'' These are quantum field theories that have a local symmetry described by a symmetry (or gauge) group.
However, for QCD, the coupling appears to increase with distance (which is why we never see an isolated quark, since they are always bound together by the strength of the coupling between them).
In order to solve QCD at longer distances, Wilson [Wilson:74a] introduced lattice gauge theory,  in which the space-time continuum is discretized and a discrete version of the gauge theory is derived which keeps the gauge symmetry intact.

(QCD), quantum field theory that describes the properties of the strong interactions between quarks and between protons and neutrons in the framework of quantum theory.
The theory was confirmed in 1979 when quarks were shown to emit gluons during studies of high-energy particle collisions at the German national laboratory in Hamburg.
QCD is nearly identical in mathematical structure to quantum electrodynamics (QED) and to the unified theory of weak and electromagnetic interactions advanced by American physicist Steven Weinberg and Pakistani physicist Abdus Salam.

On the other hand, the QCD gluons are massless, and their strong interaction is not damped by a small parameter.

 4.3.1 Introduction
Quantum chromodynamics ; (QCD)  is the proposed theory of the so-called strong interactions that bind quarks and gluons together to form hadrons-the constituents of nuclear matter such as the proton and neutron.
For example, numerical calculations have given estimates for the mass of the Higgs boson, which is currently the Holy Grail of experimental high energy physics,  and one of the motivating factors for the construction of the, now cancelled, $10 billion Superconducting Supercollider.
One of the major problems in solving lattice QCD on a computer is that the simulation of the quark interactions requires the computation of a large, highly non-local matrix determinant,  which is extremely compute-intensive.

This is the first announcement of a workshop on QCD at high temperatures and/or densities to be held in the High Energy Physics Division of the Argonne National Laboratory, Tuesday 29th June to Saturday 3rd July, 2004.
Please register by sending email to Don Sinclair dks@hep.anl.gov. We are still accepting applications, but as the date of the meeting is approached, it will become progressively harder to obtain the necessary security clearance to enter Argonne National Laboratory, especially for those of you who are not US citizens, in time for the meeting.
QCD at extremes of temperature and densities has relevance to the physics of the early universe, neutron stars (and nuclear matter in general), and to the physics of relativistic heavy-ion collisions such as are observed at RHIC and in the CERN heavy-ion program.

Using the Bethe Ansatz solution of high-energy QCD we investigate the properties of the Reggeon compound states which govern the Regge behavior of the total hadron-hadron cross sections and the small-x behavior of the structure functions of deep inelastic scattering.
The Regge behaviour of the scattering amplitudes in perturbative QCD is governed in the generalized leading logarithmic approximation by the contribution of the color--singlet compound states of Reggeized gluons.

Citebase - QCD thermodynamics at finite density
We study QCD at nonzero temperature and baryon density in the framework of the analytic continuation from imaginary chemical potential.
One suggestion for determining the properties of QCD at finite temperatures and densities is to carry out lattice simulations with an imaginary chemical potential whereby no sign problem arises, and to convert the results to real physical observables only afterwards.
Based on universal arguments it is believed that there is a critical point (E) in QCD on the temperature (T) versus chemical potential (μ) plane, which is of extreme importance for heavy-ion experiments.

 QCD and String Theory 03-28W
While physical QCD is still beyond the reach of current string theoretic methods, which require the 't Hooft coupling to be large at all energy scales, at the qualitative level many old problems of QCD have been successfully put into a new light.
The primary goal of this workshop is to enhance communication between the QCD and string-theory communities, and to accelerate the development of new methodology for QCD based on the recent technical and conceptual advances in string theory.

Twenty or even fifteen years ago, this activity was commonly called "testing QCD." Such is the success of the theory, that we now speak instead of "calculating QCD backgrounds" for the investigation of more speculative phenomena.
Thus QCD approximates the theoretical ideal: From a few purely conceptual elements, it constructs a wealth of physical consequences that describe nature faithfully.
I have tried to convince you of two things: first, that the fundamentals of QCD are simple and elegant, and second, that these fundamentals come into their own, and directly describe the physical behavior of matter, under various extreme conditions.
