RMS Queen Elizabeth 2 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
She was considered the last of the great transatlantic ocean liners prior to the construction of the QM2, and before she was refitted with a diesel power plant she was the last oil-fired passenger steamship to cross the Atlantic in scheduled liner service.
As the QE2 approaches her 40th anniversary in service, there is bound to be some speculation over her future, especially as the new Cunard cruise ship MS Queen Victoria, which is of similar size to the QE2, is due to begin sailing in 2007.
Amongst the artefacts on board is a set of antique Japanese armour presented to the QE2 by the Governor of Kagoshima, Japan, during her 1979 world cruise, and a Wedgewood vase presented to the ship by Lord Wedgewood.

Cruise Critic Reviews: Queen Elizabeth 2 (QE2)
For the past 30-plus years, QE2 reigned as the "grande dame" of the seas and like anything at the top, she has had her highs and lows.
QE2 has a top speed of 32 knots and a regular cruising speed of 28 knots, which makes it the fastest passenger vessel afloat.
We'd be remiss in not mentioning that QE2, being a British ship, offers a full afternoon tea in a number of venues: the Queen's Room, where tea is served by white gloved stewards, and sandwiches and sweets are passed; and the Lido, offering a tea buffet.

Commanding the Queen Elizabeth 2 (QE2); Cruisemates Cruise Feature Articles
When the QE2 docked at Southampton on April 18 to disembark her British passengers from an around-the-world cruise, Captain Paul Wright turned command back over to Captain Ronald Warwick, who had taken the liner on the first half of the global voyage from Fort Lauderdale to Hong Kong.
His father, Cunard Commodore William E. Warwick, had commanded the QE2 when she was new in 1969, retiring in 1972 and making the father-son combination unique in the company's 163-year history.
A squall rose as the QE2 entered the sound, and the wind was so powerful that Captain Warwick could not reverse course to make for the open waters of the Tasman Sea.

The Queen Elizabeth 2, often called "the QE2," was the flagship of the Cunard Line from 1969 until she was succeeded by RMS Queen Mary 2 in 2004.

The QE2 was built by the John Brown Shipyard in Clydebank, Scotland.

James' QE2 Page - Information   (Site not responding. Last check: )
The QE2 was originally built to help assist Cunard in maintaining the first class North Atlantic service, which had previously been serviced by the Queen Mary and Queen Elizabeth.
Construction of the QE2 began on July 2nd 1965, at 'John Brown's on the Clyde' in Scotland, in the same berth that was used to build the earlier Queen Mary and Queen Elizabeth.
Construction was finally finished in 1969 with the QE2 ready for her maiden voyage, from Southampton to New York, on May 2nd of that year.

QE2 is a majestic old lady and, even though some areas are showing signs of wear and tear, whilst we were on board a team of carpet fitters from Liverpool were spending 3 weeks on her replacing huge expanses of carpet, so money is being spent on her upkeep.
My advice is book QE2 and keep her going for many years - she's a great ship, old-fashioned, yes, but immensely pleasurable to travel on with wonderful service.
Yes QE2 is tired in places but all the carpets were being renewed on my last cruise and I hear their will be another major refit in May 2006 so I think talk of her being retired soon are incorrect!

Sealetter Cruise Ship Review: Queen Elizabeth 2 August, 2003
The main difference between our previous trips on liners and our journey on QE2 was that all of the former were cruises, whereas the latter was the true ocean crossing for which these ships were designed.
We entered QE2 in a circular lobby on Two Deck that was adorned with artwork depicting the history of Cunard.
QE2 was planned as a three-class ocean liner, although she was ultimately built to accommodate just two classes.

 QE2 page 2
November 1968, QE2 ran her sea trials which were not very successful.
After problems were rectified, Cunard still refused to accept delivery of the QE2 because of many other problems that had emerged during sea trials which had to be addressed to first.
No one ever thought it would happen, but in 1982, the QE2 was seized by the English government for war duties as a troopship in the Falkland war.

QE2, Queen Elizabeth 2 cruise ship, cruiseship, transatlantic cruises, cunard cruise, atlantic crossing onboard QE2, ...
With the passing streets dormant but still very urban at this hour, the QE2 headed upriver to complete her Transatlantic crossing and we onboard glumly started to think about having to hail a taxi on a Monday morning.
As wonderful as the QM2 will be with her balconied cabins, dramatic public rooms and absolutely immense size, she will be a very different ship, a 21st century product offering what will be a very different experience.
To cross on the QE2 from Southampton to New York or vice versa is not to cruise - traditionalists bristle at the term and rightly insist on calling it a crossing.
