  QEMM
QEMM, the Quarterdeck Expanded Memory Manager by Quarterdeck, was a popular memory manager for the DOS operating system.
QEMM provides access to the Upper Memory Area (UMA), Expanded Memory Specification (EMS) memory and Extended Memory Specification (XMS) memory.
Versions of QEMM were released into the era of Windows 98, also being compatible with it.

 QEMM - Definition, explanation
QEMM provides access to the Upper Memory Blocks (UMBs), Expanded Memory Specification (EMS) memory and Extended Memory Specification (XMS) memory.
QEMM also did not require to predefine how much memory should become EMS and how much should be XMS, therefore it was not necessary to juggle boot configurations.
The final version was QEMM 8, which was compatible with Windows 95 and later Windows 98, but by this point, DOS applications were largely obsolete and thus so was DOS memory optimisation.

QEMM uses functions 00h and 01h to either temporarily or permanently change its state, such as turning itself off when a laptop goes into sleep mode and then returning to its former state when the laptop is restarted.
In particular, QEMM versions 6 and 7 patch all *.DRV files loaded by Windows 3.0 standard mode before GDI.EXE is loaded, looking for an SMSW instruction followed by a TEST instruction on the destination of the SMSW (used to determine whether the machine is already in protected or V86 mode).
QEMM's private calls similarly allow QEMM-aware programs to accomplish things that would be possible in real mode but are not otherwise possible in V86 mode under QEMM, such as access to I/O ports without the interference of virtualization.

Even with the new QEMM stealth features that allow most of the upper memory space to be used to LOADHI these TSRs, the memory actually left for a program (or DOS window) under DV/X can end up being quite small.
Since QEMM is the 386 ``control program,'' it can only report the error caused by the user program.

QEMM 97 is a memory management program for DOS and Windows.
Expanded memory is that outside of direct access, a memory manager causes this to appear as if it is in the first 1M of memory and available to real mode use.
In DOS the QEMM program comes up with a menu that is similar to the QEMM Control Panel in Windows.

Removing QEMM from AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS
We often find that it is necessary to reinstall QEMM from scratch after installing the new BIOS.
This is due to the fact that the new BIOS is going to use different areas in upper memory and QEMM is not expecting the BIOS to change.
If you are not able to boot up properly with QEMM installed, boot clean by placing a boot disk in drive A: (with no AUTOEXEC.BAT or CONFIG.SYS) or press the F5 key when the message "Starting MS-DOS" displays on bootup (this only works with DOS 6.x).

02-12-2002, 07:44 PM QEMM was an extended memory manager, to allow a PC running DOS to access memory about 640K.
What we need is a app like RamDoubler which is quite similar to the wondeful sDoubler but it worked in real time, compressing not the files (bear in mind the files here are on a hard drive) but the ram itself, allowing more apps to run.
An app like that for the 7650 would need to run at a very low level but if sucessful would remove the need to compress/decompress apps each time they are run, it would also effectlvley compress the contacts database, java apps (...yes I know) and everything else on the phone.

 PC Problem Log:
You can use a memory manager like QEMM (supplied with all of the Ashland Computer) and run the optimize program - Due to the large amount of options and settings available this should only be done by experienced users.
This is usually caused by a third party memory manager that tends to get too aggressive with memory shadowing, and loading drivers in to areas of memory normally reserved for Windows and display drivers.
QEMM can often cause these problems when not configured for certain problems.
