QNX - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
QNX Neutrino (2001) has been ported to a number of platforms and now runs on practically any modern CPU that is used in the embedded market.
QNX is addressing some of these issues by limiting IRQ usage and using hardware polling where possible to decrease the number of task switches.
These changes in the QNX architecture are strong indications that the expected limitations of microkernel operating systems are valid for QNX as well and that even the most effective message passing cannot provide the performance to handle extreme interrupt load.

QNX pronounced like "queue nicks" is a commercial operating system that runs on intel processors, mainly the 386, 486, and Pentium, and their clones, such as MD, Nat Semiconductor, Cyrix, and SGS Thompson.
QNX 2 runs on Intel processors and clones from the 8088 through the Pentium, however problems due to speed have arisen on some 486's and Pentium's, and no fixes are anticipated.
QNX 2, like QNX 4 does a short performance test of the processor that it is running on at boot time.

 math lessons - QNX
In computing, QNX (pronounced either Q-N-X or Q-nix) is a commercial POSIX-compliant Unix-like real-time operating system, aimed primarily at the embedded systems market.
In the mid-1990s, Quantum realized that the market was rapidly moving towards the POSIX model and decided to rewrite the kernel to be much more compatible at a lower level.
QNX 4 made porting Unix software much easier and removed many of the quirks of the earlier version.

Dr. Dobb's | QNX Windows | April 15, 2003   (Site not responding. Last check: )
QNX is a networked OS (or NOS) for microcomputers capable of combining real-time performance with a user interface that can support "friendly" applications.
The traditional QNX shell interface can best be described as "UNIX without the frills." While programmers and network administrators tend to appreciate QNX's spare elegance, new QNX users — even the more technical users typical of a real-time environment — have always been subjected to a steep learning curve.
Using the QNX Windows library is facilitated by the design paradigm that all screen constructs, such as buttons or menus, are high level objects that store a complete set of characteristics for that object.

 Dr. Dobb's | Photon and QNX | July 22, 2001
QNX refers to graphical events as "photons." The Photon microkernel is about 20 Kbytes of code, plus an additional 40 Kbytes of data.
At the heart of QNX is an extremely small (about 10 Kbytes) microkernel that supports four main functions: interprocess communication, network communication, process scheduling, and interrupt dispatch.
QNX also comes with an implementation of the X Window System that utilizes the QNX message-passing scheme for communication between QNX kernels, and TCP/IP for communication with other X servers.
