CTE Report #27: QSIG: Signaling Protocol for Private Networks
QSIG is an internationally standardized protocol especially designed for use in private networks and supported by most private network components manufacturers.
QSIG is based on the ITU T standards of the Q.93x series for basic call and generic functions, and the standards of the Q.95x series for supplementary services.
QSIG offers manufacturers of PTNXs the ability to implement their own protocol procedures to provide non-standardized supplementary services without having to go through the often protracted process of standardization, or jeopardizing compatibility with other network components.

Protocol Stack: QSIG/PSS1 Source Code: TeleSoft International, Inc.
QSIG GF protocol supports both a connection-oriented and a connectionless transport mechanism for call-independent supplementary services.
QSIG GF enables transparent passage of facility and notify messages and forwards SS messages to the next network or terminal node in the circuit.
QSIG Layer 1 is the physical layer which incorporates low level drivers for the required interface devices.

qsig(1): signal batch jobs - Linux man page
The qsig utility shall signal those batch jobs for which a batch job_identifier is presented to the utility.
The qsig utility shall signal batch jobs in the order in which the corresponding batch job_identifiers are presented to the utility.
In addition to the default behavior, the qsig utility shall not be required to write a diagnostic message to standard error when the error reply received from a batch server indicates that the batch job_identifier does not exist on the server.

QSIG is specified in Ecma Standards; in particular, [2] (call control in support of basic services), [3] (generic functional protocol for the support of supplementary services), and a number of standards specifying individual supplementary services.
QSIG is independent of the type of transmission capabilities over which the signalling channel and bearer channels are provided.
QSIG is also independent of the transport protocol used to transport QSIG messages reliably over the signalling channel.

 Activities - QSIG-FAQ
QSIG is a protocol based closely on internationally agreed Standards for ISDN, whereas DPNSS is a protocol developed before the majority of ISDN standards were agreed and published.
European Standards for QSIG are available from ETSI, but in the main, these are just two page endorsements of the corresponding International Standards.
QSIG is not designed to be used with traditional PSTN (i.e., analogue local loop) connections.

QSIG is an ISDN based protocol for signalling between nodes of a Private Integrated Services Network (PISN).
The majority of standards for QSIG are also available free of charge from ECMA, either by downloading from their website (http://www.ecma.ch) or on a CD-ROM (email to helpdesk@ecma.ch).

Roxen Community: RFC 4497 Interworking between the Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) and QSIG (Best Current Practice)
Interworking between QSIG and SIP permits a call originating at a user of a PISN to terminate at a user of a corporate IP network, or a call originating at a user of a corporate IP network to terminate at a user of a PISN.
On receipt of a QSIG SETUP message containing a number that the gateway determines to be complete in the Called party number information element, or containing a Sending complete information element and a number that could potentially be complete, the gateway SHALL map the QSIG SETUP message to a SIP INVITE request.
A QSIG PROGRESS message can be received in the event of interworking on the remote side of the PISN or if the PISN is unable to complete the call and generates an in-band tone or announcement.

If the qsig command fails to process any operand, the command exits with a value greater than zero.

Best Current Practice [Page 11] RFC 4497 Interworking between SIP and QSIG May 2006 SIP methods not defined in [10] or [11] are outside the scope of this specification but could be the subject of other specifications for interworking with QSIG, e.g., for interworking in support of supplementary services.
Best Current Practice [Page 40] RFC 4497 Interworking between SIP and QSIG May 2006 implementers may wish to provide a means for gateway administrators to apply policies restricting the use of certain SIP URIs or tel URLs, or SIP URI or tel URL parameters, when authorizing a call from SIP to QSIG.

These media types are intended for ISUP or QSIG application information that is used within the context of a SIP session, and not as general purpose transport of SCN signaling.

At the end of June 2000 the General Assembly of ECMA approved for publication as an ECMA Standard, the Profile Standard developed by EUROCONTROL and PQM Consultants for the use of PSS1 (QSIG) in ATS networks.
The purpose of this Standard is to encourage Service Providers offering a QSIG based VPN service to do so in a harmonised manner.
Completion of the work is planned for the end of the year and publication of this Standard is expected to stimulate the market for QSIG based VPN services.
