Qaanaaq (roughly pronounced KAH-nahk), formerly Thule, is a town and municipality in northwestern Greenland.
The town of Qaanaaq has a population of 640, and the whole municipality 850 (as of 1 January 2005).
Near Qaanaaq there is one of the tallest constructions in the world, the Radio Mast Thule.

Qaanaaq is the world's northernmost municipality and the settlement of Siorapaluk is the northernmost inhabited place on Earth.
The meat is naturally used as food for both people and dogs, polar bear skins are used for trousers, sealskins for kamiks (top boots) and anoraks and narwhal tusks for making hunting implements and handicrafts.
Qaanaaq is the base of Ultima Thule with its high quality production of crafts, which are exported to other Greenland towns.

Nothing from the hunt goes to waste: the skins are used for clothing and covering the kayaks; the flesh and offal are eaten by humans and domestic animals; the narwhal and walrus tusks are carved into finely-worked figures, jewellery and hunting implements, and even feathers can be used in handicrafts.
The town of Qaanaaq was first established during the 1950s when the US airbase, which was originally built during the Cold War at Thule/Dundas, needed to be extended.
There is a small hotel in Qaanaaq, and the glaciers are less than an hour's walk from town.

It was too far to travel back to the old grounds (and, even then, permits were required from the Danes) and, as the next generations came along, many turned their backs on the hunting way of life.
What you have to realise is that although we are taking on the Danish government, de facto and inter alia, this is really a case between the people of Qaanaaq and the American government; the smallest, most remote population on earth against one of the most populous and the most powerful.

The airport in Paamiut will be more expensive than the one in Qaanaaq, but the two should not be compared, according to Miki Hoegh of the Greenlandic airport authority GLV (Gronlands Lufthavnsvaesen).
The building of the runway in Qaanaaq was recently criticised in the Danish media.
The runway is partly paid for by the Danish authorities, but there are no guarantees yet that it will even be used due to the proximity of the Thule Air Base.

Thr travel route is Copenhagen to Kangerlusuaq and to Ilulisat where you have to stay overnight, next morning the flight starts in Ilulisat to Upernavik and to Qaanaaq.
There are flights from Ilulisat to Qaanaaq on Tuesday and Thursday.

“We’re proud to be partners with the Qaanaaq community and are honored to be a part of this special holiday event,” said Col. John Haven, 821st Air Base Group commander.
