  Lateralus Meanings
Qabala is a system of thought - a way to correlate a variety of archetypes, each symbolizing a different aspect of living.
Qabala is relatively new, though the notion that it is a reconstruction of the lost knowledge of the ancients adds to its appeal.
I'm not saying this album is totally in confluence with the Qabala, but you have to admit there are a lot of references made to it in the songs.

Qabala is an experiential path, an experiment which lasts throughout one's life.
Qabala is ultimately about access to and experience of discrete states of consciousness, ways of being and becoming.
While Synergetic Qabala is essentially a geometrical philosophy, it is not a sterile number mysticism, but a theosophical approach to the unfathomable mysteries of Qabala and its essentially mystical orientation.

The Qabala knows tht YHWH is not a deity but an immanence which can become alive and active when the two vitialities in us, the container and the contained, fecundate each other.
The Qabala, for the time being, obeyed the Law, and reciprocally the Law held the Qabala in great respect and honour.
This is far more real than the projection (in an imaginary haven) of a mere symbol of the feminine archetype to be worshipped, such as, for instance, Mary, Mother of Jesus.

Qabala also incorporates the themes of circular and cosmic time, by valorizing the cycle of birth, death, and rebirth (initiation).
These were incorporated into Qabala in such ideas as the path of return, planetary spheres, spiritual hierarchy and demonology.
In this pursuit, we are not trying to improve or defile Qabala, but employ our spiritual sensitivity to engage in true speculation, or seeing in the sense of the seer.

A weird kind of divide seemed to be in place which saw ceremonial work, especially and centrally Qabala, as something alien to and removed from the Goddess and God archetypes of Wicca, along with the reverence of nature in witchcraft and paganism.
What this form of Qabala teaches is that the ultimate point of creation is neither male or female, but that the emanations from that neutral point are indeed both male and female at the highest (supernal) level.

The term Qabala, alternately spelled Qabalah, cabala, cabbala and probably six other ways, is from the hebrew and it means "tradition" and rather specifically an oral tradition.
The "tradition" or qabala before that is really of little interest to the modern student, unless they are jewish of course.
The Qabala went through many changes during the centuries between the 13th and our own but the most important change for us today was its gradual evolution into a philosophical system rather than a sectarian dogma.

Qabala forms the basis for Qabalistic High Magick, but is a philosophy which covers much more than the magick itself.
Qabala has suffered a long and muddy history, but, in ways which are as amazing as the legacy of the Bible over such a long period of time, Qabala has managed to survive thousands of years of upheaval on this planet.
Though there is a Judaic bend on Qabala, since the Jews have been the keepers of Kabalah for thousands of years, the common branches of Qabala are not Jewish, and definitely differ from the "Kosher Kabalah" followed by the traditional Mystic Jews.

It doesn't help that the Qabala comes to Pagans from Ceremonial Magic, and that the language used to discuss the Qabala tends to be full of 'Thou must's and complicated formulas for posture alignment and times of day in which to meditate.
One of the things I find fascinating about the Qabala is that its tradition states that it's scholars must continually re-present its knowledge, updating it as more wisdom regarding our world is found.

In this journey it has been my experience that when spelled qabala, it is practical kabbalah, often with much less connection to kabbalah's origins in Judaism.
When it is spelled "kaballah" it tends to be more "jewish" although it is appropriate for anyone who believes in the one Judeo-Christian God and Scriptures, and its more related to spirituality.

One of the important underlying assumptions of qabala is that the Hebrew alphabet is a mystical one and that each letter has its own set of properties that can aid in mystical work.
And there are several techniques used by Jewish mystics to work with these letters and connect ideas that may, to the casual observer, seem to be completely unrelated.
Central to qabala is the idea of 32 "paths." In Hebrew, 32 is written as LB (lamed = 30; beth = 2).
