Al-Ashraf Abu Al-Nasr Seif Al-Din Qait Bay Al-Jekasy Al-Zahiry, better known as Sultan Qait Bay, was originally a Circassian who was bought for 50 dinars by the ninth Sultan Barsbay before being freed by the 11th Sultan Jaqmaq.
Qait Bay was renowned as a great patron of art and architecture during his 29-year rule.
The mosque of Sultan Qait Bay in the Northern Cemetery is not just a remarkable historical edifice, but by far one of Islamic Cairo's most breathtaking monuments.

Sultan Qait Bay ruled from 1468 to 1496 and he was known for his strong taxation where one third of the country's production was taken as tax.
Emir Qurqumas was originally a Mamluk under Sultan Qait Bay, but rose in rank to "Atabeg" (Commander in-Chief) during the rule of Sultan Qansuh al-Ghuri - one of the last Mamluk rulers in Egypt.
Sultan Qait Bay is followed by Sultan Tuman Bay who later looses the battle against the Ottoman army in 1516.

In about 1480, the Mameluke Sultan Qait Bey fortified the peninsula, using the foundations and debris of the Pharos lighthouse to build his fort, incorporating a castle and mosque within the walls.
Mohammed Ali modernised the fort's defenses in the 19th century, but the minaret and castle were severely damaged by a British bombardment in 1882.

Gaballa Ali Gaballa, secretary-general of the Supreme Council of Antiquities (SCA), said there was no request from a French mission to share the antiquities discovered in the shipwreck.
Two French teams are currently in the eastern harbour and in Qait bay, an Italian mission is on Nelson Island while a US team is scouring Se'adana Island on the Red Sea coast.
