Pinyin news » Blog Archive » language reformer Qian Xuantong remembered
Two days ago was the 68th anniversary of the death of Qian Xuantong (Qián Xuántóng / 錢玄同 / 钱玄同 / Ch’ien Hsüan-t’ung) (1887–1939), a phonetician, philologist, and professor of literature at Peking University.
Although he isn’t well known today, Qian was an important contributor to the reforms associated with the May 4 movement.
At any rate, others soon convinced Qian of the error of his ways, and before long he was a strong supporter of romanization, as were many others of his generation, including Lu Xun.

Session 68   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-26)
After years of cultural debates, in early republican China the thesis has come to stay that modernization of language and script was the basis for any further development of a modern Chinese state and society.
Cultural and linguistic iconoclasts like Hu Shi, Chen Duxiu and Qian Xuantong openly doubted the merits and authenticity of Chinese language and script.
Yet, the quest for a national language guoyu was a more political than only a cultural or linguistic one.

Chinese History - Xia Dynasty 夏 event history (www.chinaknowledge.de)
Taiwan R.O.C. It seems to be quite plausible that events of prehistory as old as the accounts of the Yellow Emperor, Yao and Shun, Yu the Great and the Xia Dynasty are purely mythical inventions.
Gu Jiegang 顧頡剛 and Qian Xuantong 錢玄同, representants of the School Doubting Antiquity (Yigupai 痑古派) demonstrated that the Xia Dynasty was a pure invention of later periods.
But as not much more is known of the Xia Dynasty as simple genealogical lists of the rulers, there should be no doubt about the existence of such a royal line, even if detailed accounts of Yu taming the floods and fixing the geography of China might be of later date.

 Welcome to drama
Using New Youth as their banner, they published articles to the effect that the traditional drama was banal and trite in content, divorced from reality and thus detrimental to morals and ethics.
Qian Xuantong regarded the painted face in traditional drama as ridiculous as a swastika imprinted on the bristle of all pigs in a hoggery and a circular print on the heel of each horse in a stable.
Liu Bannong ridiculed the stage activities in the traditional drama as fandangle against the deafening sound of beating gongs and drums, making the audience dizzy and confused.

 Classical Chinese Summary
The dominance of classical Chinese came to an end after the first Opium War (1840–1842) as intellectuals began to see the classical/vernacular gap as a hindrance to greater literacy and called for the replacement of classical Chinese with the modern spoken language in education and media as part and parcel of the modernization of China.
In the New Culture Movement of the late 1910s, promotion of Vernacular Chinese gathered momentum through the efforts of noted scholars such as Hu Shi, Chen Duxiu (1879–1942), Qian Xuantong (1887–1939), and Fu Sinian (1896–1950), culminating in the Vernacular Language Movement of 1917–1919.
As a result of this movement, vernacular Chinese was adopted as the standard language of textbooks, and influential new works of literature by authors such as Lu Xun (1881–1936) began appearing in the vernacular.
