Terrestrial Ecoregions -- Qilian Mountains conifer forests (PA0517)
Forests in the Qilian Mountains are reported to support a dense understory of small-stature bamboo which provides potential habitat for the giant panda, although this emblematic species is currently limited in its distribution to places southwest of here.
The Hexi Corridor is a chain of narrow depressions between the mountain ranges in this region that is functions as an ecological divide between the desert region in the north and the plateau in the south.
At higher altitudes along the Qilian Mountains is a scattered spruce belt (2b) according to the CVMCC (1979) Vegetation Map of China classes.

 Scientist Calls for Glacier Protection
Glacier-covered Tianshan, Qilian, Gongga and Yulong mountain ranges, all in northwestern China, have been affected to varying degrees, said Yao, deputy director of Cold and Arid Regions Environment and Engineering Research Institute affiliated with the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
The scientist warned that some glaciers in China are experiencing intensifying melting, citing statistics that the size of glaciers in the Qilian Mountains shrank by 4.5 percent between 1850 and 1950, and further by 4.7 percent from 1950 to the present.
He suggested the state increase investment to establish glacier monitoring stations, a glacier alarm system and make a thorough study into the reserve of glaciers and the law of its changes with the help of remote sensing technology so that prompt countermeasures can be taken once a glacier is found shrinking.

Yuezhi - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
They were originally settled in the arid grasslands of the eastern Tarim Basin area, in what is today Xinjiang, Gansu, and possibly Qilian in China, before they migrated to Transoxiana, Bactria and then northern India, where they formed the Kushan Empire.
According to these accounts, "the Yuezhi originally lived in the area between the Qilian, or Heavenly Mountain (Tian Shan) and Dunhuang" (Shiji, 123), corresponding to the eastern half of the Tarim Basin and the northern portion of Gansu
The Yuezhi may have been a Caucasoid people, as indicated by the portraits of their kings on the coins they struck following their exodus to Transoxiana (2nd-1st century BCE), and especially the coins they struck in India as Kushans (1st-3rd century CE).

The Qilian fold belt located along the southwestern margin of the North China block comprises continental margin and oceanic basin strata belonging to the Trans-Hudsonian, Grenville, and Caledonian orogenic events.
The Ta-Den Creek section of the northern North Qilian belt represents the youngest Caledonian basin investigated, with metasediments defining an age of 412 Ma and having compositions showing a more significant contribution from ocean floor and arc material.
The Central Qilian belt may thus represent fragments of rifted continental basement dispersed through the western Iapetus Ocean basin, similar to the tectonic structure of the modern western Pacific.

The Aoyougou mafic-ultramafic complex lies in the Paleozoic orogenic belt of the western part of the North Qilian Mountains near Aoyougou valley in Gansu Province, northwestern China.
It consists of serpentinite, a cumulate sequence of gabbro and diorite, pillowed and massive lavas, diabase dikes, and chert, an assemblage tentatively interpreted as an ophiolite.
Based on the lava geochemistry, the nature of the serpentinite, and the regional geology, the Aoyougou complex is interpreted as a fragment of oceanic lithosphere that may have formed at an oceanic spreading axis.

Abstract: The Ta'ergou tungsten deposit in Gansu province, northwestern China, is located in the western part of the North Qilian Caledonian orogen, and consists of scheelite skarn bodies and wolframite quartz veins.
The tungsten-bearing skarn developed by the replacement of carbonate layers intercalated in the Precambrian schist and amphibolite whereas wolframite-quartz ore veins developed along a group of fractures that cut through horizontal skarns.
It has been proved that Precambrian strata in the west sector of North Qilian region are enriched in tungsten.
