He stayed in Qingzhou for a year, translating and editing the Buddhist texts he had acquired as well as preaching to the local populace.

Melekian went on to say that the oldest stele in the group (dated 529), was cut very precisely into three pieces (commercial tomb raiders are known to do this when dividing their loot), and that the clear cuts indicate it was only recently taken apart.
Capon is convinced that the pieces in the Taipei exhibition were also from that Qingzhou pit, which would suggest that some of the Qingzhou statues were excavated earlier than 1996 and made their way onto the market.

In 1996, construction workers at a primary school in the town of Qingzhou (about 250 miles south of Beijing in the Shandong province) discovered a burial pit beneath the playing field, formerly the site of a buddhist temple.
Many of the figures at the Royal Academy are in fact bodhisattvas, beloved of sculptors because, as still-worldly beings, their clothing, jewellery and headwear can be portrayed as richly detailed, where the Buddha himself was noted for his plain monk's robe.
Elsewhere, on the Buddha, the original skin colour has also been well preserved: the fabled glow of the Buddha's body is rendered by gilding, while his top-knot (symbolising his wisdom) is still a rich blue on one of the oldest exhibits.
