The study describes the impact of the increasingly fragmented nature of the remaining habitat, which in some areas is so fragmented that it is difficult for pandas to travel from one reserve to the next.
Although the Qinling pandas represent a fraction of the entire panda population, habitat fragmentation is a problem that reaches across all of the six mountain ranges in China where all of the world's pandas live.

The giant panda sub-populations were reconnected after the Qinling tunnel was built, making this reserve the only place in the Qinling Mountains where the giant panda habitat is not fragmented by roads.

A Juvenile Sichuan Golden Monkey (Rhinopithecus roxellana) Predated by a Goshawk (Accipiter gentilis) in the Qinling Mountains
It has been suggested that hawks, panthers, jackals, lynxes and wolves may prey on Sichuan golden monkeys in the wild [1, 2], but all these assumptions were based on observations of dead monkeys eaten by predators, and no direct attack of a living individual has been witnessed.
During our field study on the behavioural ecology of Sichuan snub-nosed monkeys in Zhouzhi Nature Reserve (107°45' E, 33°44' N) in the Qinling Mountains, predation of a juvenile monkey by a goshawk (Accipiter gentilis) was directly observed by us, and we describe this event here.
