	Qirsh - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
		Qirsh, Gersh and Kuruş are all names for currency denominations in and around the territories formerly part of the Ottoman Empire.
		The original qirsh was a large, 17th century silver piece, similar to the European thalers, issued by the Ottomans.
		Others, including Jordan and Sudan, adopted the qirsh as a denomination when they established their own currencies.

		Until 1992, coins were denominated in Arabic using fils, qirsh, dirham and dinar but in English only in fils and dinar.
		Since 1992, the fils and dirham are no longer used in the Arabic denominations and the English denominations are given in dinar and either qirsh or piastres.
		Coins in circulation are: ½ qirsh (5 fils), 1 qirsh (10 fils), 2½ piastres (25 fils), 5 piastres (50 fils), 10 piastres (100 fils), ¼ dinar, ½ dinar and 1 dinar.

		It should be noted that the cut-out in the lattice for the Arabic script is smaller in the ½ and 1½ qirsh, perhaps reinforcing the theory that these were the first to be produced, after which the design was modified for the other values.
		Indeed, the fact that the ½ qirsh value has the smallest cut-out of all values, could indicate that that was the first value produced.
		There are important differences between the ½ and 1½ qirsh values and the rest of the series, but that the significance of these differences is not known.
