Outside the Qitaihe mine in China's northeast, a stream of emergency vehicles with flashing red lights and fl government sedans made their way up and down the narrow, two-lane road to the mine entrance.
Government television in Heilongjiang province, where Qitaihe is located, showed an injured miner, his face fl with coal dust, being led from the mine and collapsing onto a stretcher.

Families desperately waiting for news of the 149 miners dead or missing at the mine in Qitaihe city in the northeastern province of Heilongjiang accused the management of cynically sacrificing their men in the drive for profit.
Qitaihe city's main industry is coal mining and there is little choice for local men who lack education and other professional skills to find employment outside the mines, many of the grieving relatives said.
