Qnext and Trillian 3.1 | Improve The IM Experience | March 17, 2005 | Network Computing
Qnext is a Java-based P2P network with its own instant messaging network, group text chats, VoIP, and voice conferencing, among others, Like other P2P services, it creates "Zones" on the user's hard drive where files -- audio, images, etc. -- can be shared among the user's IM buddies.

Messaging Pipeline | QNext Takes IM Beyond The Next Level
Qnext users can create "zones" which combine the interface for a particular application -- text chat, file transfer, and photo albums are three examples -- with the security controls for specifying which users have access to the zone.
The Qnext server provides a search function that lets users discover the zones they have been granted access to (and only those zones) as well as look up other Qnext users by a variety of criteria such as email address, last name, or city.
Architecturally, Qnext is a hybrid of server and peer-to-peer: users authenticate through the Qnext server, which acts as a sort of domain controller to administer access and enforce security.
