  Fungicides: QoI fungicides
Quinone outside inhibitor (QoI) fungicides include three fungicide families, the well-known family of strobilurins and two new families, represented by fenamidone and famoxadone.
QoI fungicides approved for, or in review for, use on field crops in Iowa include strobilurins azoxystrobin, pyraclostrobin and trifloxystrobin, and famoxadone.
Apply QoI fungicides according to manufacturers' recommendations for the target disease at the specific crop growth stage indicated.

QoI resistance was detected on 27 July in 1 of 5 fields with early plantings of summer squash and pumpkin (Table 1).
QoI resistance was detected in all 7 fields where the second bioassay was conducted on 31 Aug, including one field where Nova was used but not QoIs (Tables 1 and 2, Figure 4).
QoI resistant strains were present at the start of powdery mildew development in 2003 and their frequency increased greatly during the season, efficacy was affected, and they occurred in crops not treated with QoIs.

QoI - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
QoI, or Quinone outside inhibitors are a group of fungicides used in agriculture.
QoI are chemical compounds which act at the Quinol outer binding site of the cytochrome bc1 complex.
QoI's are the resulting fusion of three fungicides families, the well-known family of strobilurins and two new families, represented by fenamidone and famoxadone.

QoI fungicides, applied as tank mix or as a co-formulated mixture with an effective mixture partner, should be used in single or block applications in alternation with fungicides from a different cross-resistance group.
QoI fungicides are very effective at preventing spore germination and should therefore be used at the early stages of disease development (preventive treatment).
For QoI mixes in programs in which tank mixes or pre mixes of QoI with mixing partners of a different mode of action are utilized, the number of QoI containing applications should be no more than ½ (50%) of the total number of fungicide application per season.

Amendments to Statutory Conditions of Use of Quinone outside Inhibitor (QoI) Fungicides - Further Information - News ...
Given the importance of QoI products in cereal production we feel that it is prudent to take these steps now to try and ensure their continued activity in the future.
By restricting the number of foliar applications of QoI containing products to two, used specifically in combination with robust doses of effective partner products, the period during which the fungus is under selection pressure to develop resistance is limited.
By only using QoI fungicides in mixture with other active substances effective against the same disease, any fungi that are resistant to QoI products will be controlled by the other product and will not therefore become dominant in the population.

QoIs are not cross-resistant with other fungicide groups, but there is cross-resistance among all the active ingredients within the QoI group.

Resistance to QoI fungicides (strobilurins, famoxadone and fenamidone) in populations of Plasmopara viticola (Berk & Curt) Berlese & de Toni developed soon after their introduction in France and Italy.
The selection pressure resulting from QoI fungicides applied alone or in mixtures with non-QoI fungicides was investigated in whole plant experiments under controlled conditions.
Mixture experiments indicated that selection pressure was affected most by the dose of the QoI fungicide and the nature of the partner fungicide.

These data support observations by some chickpea producers that QoI fungicides are not as effective as they used to be in controlling Ascochyta blight and indicate the pathogen causing Ascochyta blight is resistant to QoI fungicides.
These results have led researchers at NDSU to recommend that QoI fungicides not be used on chickpea in North Dakota in 2007.
To stop or slow the progress of fungicide resistance, and in the hopes that the QoI fungicides can be used again in the future for Ascochyta disease control, avoiding the use of any QoI fungicide on chickpea alone or in combination with other chemistries this year is important.

In June, we reported on the emergence of strains of Pyricularia grisea from perennial ryegrass with resistance to QoI (strobilurin-like) fungicides.
As part of an effort to investigate control approaches for these resistant strains, we conducted a field trial to test the hypothesis that tank-mixes of QoI fungicides (Heritage or Insignia) with chlorothalonil (Daconil Ultrex) would provide better disease control of QoI- resistant strains than would chlorothalonil alone.
This was based on a postulated synergism between QoI fungicides and chlorothalonil against QoI-resistant strains.
