Quabbin: A History and Explorers Guide: Current Amazon U.S.A. One-Edition Data
The flooding of the Swift River Valley and the creation of the Quabbin Reservoir is one of the most traumatic and interesting stories in American history, and Michael Tougias tells the tale crisply and with authority.
The Quabbin Reservoir is an amazing "accidental wilderness" with an equally amazing history; its creation caused four towns to be "drowned." Today, the Quabbin has 118 miles of undeveloped shoreline, with the surrounding reservation spanning some 81,000 acres of protected open space.
Quabbin's beauty can be breathtaking; reading and consulting this book will further your appreciation of the place.

 Questions & Answers
The Nipmucks inhabited the Swift River Valley and referred to this area as the Quabbin.
Quabbin has been referred to as the "accidental wilderness." Originally built as a public drinking water supply, the large area of protected watershed land around the reservoir became in effect, a wildlife sanctuary.
Additional structures were removed from the 56,000 acres of land purchased for watershed protection around the reservoir, bringing to 1,100 the number of houses, barns, and sheds torn down or moved for the Quabbin project.

Boston.com / News / Local / Mass. / Quabbin Reservoir nearing capacity, triggering big water releases
Quabbin was created in the 1930s by flooding the Swift River Valley towns of Prescott, Dana, Enfield and Greenwich.
Quabbin Reservoir is threatening to reach capacity for the first time in seven years, leading reservoir managers to release 150 million gallons a day over spillways to reduce the flooding risk.
Because of its size, the Quabbin is both slow to draw down in time of drought and slow to fill up afterward, said William Pula, reservoir superintendent for the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation.

Inside Out Documentaries : Haunting the Quabbin: WBUR Boston
Even fewer know the story of how four towns in an idyllic valley setting were utterly destroyed, leveled, and burnt to the ground in the late 30s to build the Quabbin, the biggest drinking water reservoir of the era.
Few Boston residents know that the water filling their downtown sinks comes from a huge reservoir some 65 miles west of Boston, the Quabbin.
The building of the Quabbin Reservoir displaced twenty-five hundred people.

 A New England Odyssey -- Friday, August 25, 1995
The Quabbin Reservoir was planned back around the turn of the century to provide clean drinking water for Boston, which was rapidly growing.
Where the reservoir is now used to be the Swift River Valley, which was occupied by 4 towns and at least 12 villages.
The residents of the area were, understandably, opposed to the reservoir, but the needs of the many outweighed the needs of the few, and the reservoir went in.

Cross Currents - Telegram & Gazette
When the state flooded the Swift River Valley and drowned four small towns to create Quabbin Reservoir in the 1930s, it already had some experience moving people and buildings to provide water for Metropolitan Boston.
The Legislature approved the plan in 1895, and the reservoir construction was to be completed over the next 10 years at a cost of $21.6 million.
Although whole communities were not destroyed to create Wachusett Reservoir at the close of the 19th century, parts of four towns in the heart of Central Massachusetts were submerged, changing them forever.
