Quackery - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Quack medicines often had little in the way of active ingredients, or had ingredients which made a person feel good, such as what came to be known as recreational drugs.
Widely marketed quack medicines (as opposed to locally produced and locally used remedies), often referred to as Patent medicines, first came to prominence in Britain and the British colonies, including North America, in the 17th and 18th centuries.
The quacks who sold them were called "snake oil peddlers", and usually sold their medicines with a fervent pitch similar to a fire and brimstone religious sermon.

 Characterization of Quack Theories
A quack will often reply that his ideas have evidence, just not the kind accepted by "science." The problem with this is that science is no more and no less than sum total of what we have learned about evaluating general empirical claims and their evidence.
Quacks want to find some room in between, but they cannot explain why we should accept the kind of evidence in their case that has proven so bad in other cases.
Quack theorists often distort the rest of science is in order to make their favored notions seem more equal in comparison.

Quacks often offered the "no cure, no money" guarantee, the equivalent of our modern "money-back guarantee." Unfortunately for the dissatisfied, getting one's money back often involved writing a glowing testimonial for the product, which meant including personal information such as name and address (6).

Quack, Quack, Quack, on view at the Grolier Club from September 18th to November 23rd 2002, showcases the often flamboyant sellers of nostrums and patent medicines over the course of four centuries, through visual, often entertaining, material.
These range from the ways of itinerant quacks, their use of various extravagant marketing techniques, the frequent bitter rivalry between sellers of panaceas, each with his or her own theory supported by dubious claims of efficacy; to quacks in the arts and, finally, to the first governmental restrictions on the more flagrant abuses.
Altogether, Quack, Quack, Quack: The Sellers of Nostrums in Prints, Posters, Ephemera and Books comprises 185 items, all drawn from the collection of William H. Helfand, who has curated the exhibition.
