Quadrans - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The quadrans (literally meaning a "a quarter") was low value Roman bronze coin worth 1/4th of an as.
The quadrans was issued from the beginning of cast bronze coins during the Roman Republic with a three pellets (representing three unciae) as a mark of value.
Unlike other coins during the Roman Empire, the quadrans rarely bore the image of the emperor.

 Clarke's Commentary - Luke 21
A certain poor widow] A widow miserably poor; this is the proper import of penicran, and her being miserably poor heightened the merit of the action.
In ancient times our penny used to be marked with a deep indented cross, dividing the piece into four equal parts, which, when broken in two, made the half-penny, and, when broken into four, made the fourthing, what we have corrupted into farthing.
Our term mite seems to have been taken from the animal called by that name; for as that appeared to our ancestors to be the smallest of all animals, so this being the smallest of all coins was called by its name.

The 'quadrans vetus' or 'old quadrant' is one of the most ingenious of medieval instruments and it is also extremely rare.
The Museum has a single example (accession number F10), dated to around 1300 A.D. The principal face of the quadrans vetus is used for calculating the time from the altitude of the sun.
The apparent position of the sun in the sky is related to time, but it also varies with the time of the year and the latitude of the observer; a sun-based universal time-teller must somehow take account of these variables.

The constellation represents the mural quadrant, an astronomical instrument that he and his nephew used to plot and observe stars.
Quadrans Muralis was created from stars found to the north of Bootes, the herdsmen; just behind the tail of the great bear of Ursa Major.
The constellation is no longer recognized by astronomers, but a meteor shower which peaks at the beginning of January, known as the Quadrantids, is named after this constellation.

The vast deep southern hemisphere (which the Greeks and their predecessors could not see) was loaded with them, however, and there were still plenty of faint star patterns that the ancients had ignored, all waiting to be organized and named.
They are remarkably well distributed: Quadrans lies in the far northern hemisphere, Sextans straddles the equator, and Octans surrounds the southern rotation pole.
While among the departed (many mercifully so) constellations, the ghost of Quadrans survives through a meteor shower that was discovered (in 1825) emanating from it before its official demise, the marvelous Quadrantids.

The quadrans and semis are small coins, both being the size of a U.S. dime.
Obeying Gresham's Law, "the bad money chased out the good" and these new coins, antoniniani (aside: we do not know the actual name of the denomination as it is lost to his-tory, antonmianus is one of Caracalla's names) chased denarii, dupondii, sestertii and asses out of circulation by the middle of the 3rd century.
Semis and quadrans were so infrequently issued and more inherently token-like that they were not affected.

The Astrolabe Quadrant   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-22)
The instrument was quickly named the quadrans novus (new quadrant) to differentiate it from the traditional quadrant or quadrans vetus (old quadrant).
The basic idea behind the idea of the quadrans novus is that the stereographic projection that defines the components of a planispheric astrolabe is just as valid if the astrolabe parts are folded into a single quadrant.
The result is an instrument that can perform many of the functions of a standard astrolabe at much lower cost, but without the intuitive representation of the sky provided by the rotating rete,.

In the pantheon of modern constellations, one navigational/positional instrument (Octans, the Octant) finds the way in the southern sky, while another, Quadrans (the Quadrant) seeks the stars in the northern, while yet another, Sextans (the Sextant) falls in the middle, straddling the celestial equator.
Only two of these, however, remain, Quadrans long ago dropped from the official roll call.
It crossed over from one hemisphere to the other in December of 1923 (the celestial equator actually shifting, not the star).
