Quake II - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Quake II uses the shared library functionality of the operating system to load the game library at run-time - this is how mod authors are able to alter the game and provide different gameplay mechanics, new weapons and much more.
The full source code to Quake II version 3.19 was released under the terms of the GPL on December 21, 2001.
Be Incorporated officially ported Quake II: Colossus to the BeOS to test their OpenGL acceleration in 1999, and provided the game files for free download at a later date - a Windows, Macintosh or Linux install CD was required to install the game, with the official addons being optional.

Quake II is a game that everyone should at least see, just to find out how advanced computer games have evolved.
In Quake II, I actually paused on more than one occasion to stare at the intricate environment before me. The player encounters canyons with machinery built in the walls, dungeons with complex computers flashing, elaborate warehouse and factory complexes stacked with equipment that functions and crates all over.
Instead of finishing one level and moving on to the next, Quake II has missions that tie the various levels together.

Using advanced effects such as Per Pixel Lighting and Shadowing, Fragment And Vertex Programs, High Resolution textures and models, and an advanced version of the Doom 3 Shader System, Quake II Evolved's goal is a simple one; To take Quake 2, and pump up the detail to tomorrows standards.

 Notes From Kaizer
One of the most exciting projects in today's mod scene is Team Blur's Quake II Evolved.
Much like it's classic quake cousin Tenebrae, the next version of Q2E will feature real-time, per-pixel lighting, making it look more like Doom 3 than the seven year-old game it really is. What makes this feat even more impressive is that Team Blur is just two people — artist Odium and programmer Berserk.
Also planned is a standalone game based on Team Blur's hybrid engine, called Quake 2: Overdose, although details are tantalisingly scarce at this point.

Quake II Evolved (or Q2E) has seen some serious set back already as the project has been accused of using illegally leaked GOLK code (the code that is Quake III engine).
Berserk has now confirmed this in their own forums and initially appears to want to close the project down and concentrate on finding others that use illegal GOLK code.
The community appears to be standing behind the Q2E project which is basically a technology update for Quake 2 bringing it up to todays standards.
