Quake - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Quake popularized several major advances in the 3D game genre: it uses 3-dimensional models for players and monsters instead of 2-dimensional sprites; and the world in which play takes place is created as a true 3-dimensional space, rather than a 2-dimensional map with height information which is then rendered to 3D.
Quake pioneered the fluid control scheme of using the mouse to look/aim/orient ("mouselook") and the keyboard to move forward, backward and sideways.

Quake 4's pace is somewhat more drawn out with greater tension, as apposed to the relentless hell spawn chopping at your knickers every five seconds in Doom 3.
Quake 4 also tries to mix things up a little by allowing players to go to town in a variety of vehicle scenarios: tanks, machine gun trolleys, mechwarriors, etc. Most of the time these events serve as on-rail shooters designed to break up the repetitiveness of the on-foot action.
Quake 4 wouldn't be complete without a decent multiplayer component and to the games favor it comes equipped with a handful of modes suited for up to eight players (although some modes are purely one-on-one action): Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, Capture the Flag, Arena CTF, and Tourney.

Quake 4 for PC Review - PC Quake 4 Review
Quake was among the first PC first-person shooters to let you take your multiplayer matches onto the Internet, and over the years, the series has become synonymous with great technology and exciting multiplayer.
Quake III Arena was multiplayer focused, with no true single-player storyline other than that a wide collection of warriors--some taken from the Doom and Quake games--had been pulled out of their own timelines and into this futuristic battle arena.
In Quake 4, you'll be armed with a fairly standard collection of weapons that may have originated in the Quake II universe--but that doesn't mean they're all identical.

Quake series, and has a more complicated artificial intelligence than any other id shooter before it, it’s obviously a run-‘n’-gun shooter where things like going prone, using stealth and giving orders are not at home.
Quake 4 is nothing special, nothing worthy of telling your grandchildren about, nothing you haven’t seen done at least once or twice before, and that is disappointing.

Quake 4 is a compelling game, but when saddled with an extremely unstable frame rate, it's tough to recommend.
While the goal was clearly to duplicate Quake III Arena's fantastic deathmatch, the feel of the game isn't quite right, and aside from the inclusion of a few maps from previous Quake games, it doesn't manage to pull off the nostalgic feel it was probably going for.
Quake 4 could have been a great game, but the performance issues are so heavy that they have a negative impact across the board.

Quake is arguably the most well-received shooter series ever, provided PC gamers with hours upon hours of mindless, addictive action while keeping their hands busy in the process.
Since Quake III is a shooter, it would seem natural that most of the improvements and enhancements in the next installment of the series would be in the weapons.
As in previous Quake titles, in addition to these nine implements of destruction, there are a number of specials and power-ups that you can pick up as you run around the crowded hallways in each level.

Quake 3 Arena will be one of the first games to introduce curved surfaces into the 3D game genre.
They are simply lines or a series of lines following a user defined bezier curve The defined curve can be extruded upon the lateral axis of the curve to form a bevel, or closed to form a flat polygon (a round disc or portion thereof).
While some considertaion to performance must be kep in mind, this allows a level designer to be frugal with their use of curves in a given area, and still be confident that the engine will be able to handle the number of polygons that will be generated.
