  Linux Quake How-To: Game Engines
Possibly because of it's size, QuakeForge hasn't been updated in years and it's documentation was never quite finished.
Kudos to the QuakeForge team for a huge project which has provided much inspiration for other open source games.
TyrQuake and QuakeForge have software clients, and there is also an old SDL Quake written by SDL's author, Sam Lantinga, which should work on all modern platforms.

QuakeForge and Quake2Forge are always in constant development.
QuakeForge: NUQ (pronounced "Nuke") is, basically, the Classic Quake version of Newtree.

Ports were done by Florent Parent and André Cormier of Viagénie.

QuakeForge is a source port of Quake and QuakeWorld, the successors to id Software's very popular DOOM series.
As the site explains, the QuakeForge was designed to compile on GCC 3.4, so you'll have to get that first as it doesn't work on GCC 4.

Whether or not servers adopt the QuakeForge server is up in the air, and it's very likely that mods will require a recompile (at the very least) to be compatible with the new executables.
It may be worth waiting a bit to see how well received QuakeForge becomes, and do a Mac port after the fact (and after the major bugs have been worked out).

 LinuxGames - For the People
The binary is supposed to work with NVIDIA, Matrox, and other non-3dfx cards and it is apparently compiled from the original Quake 1 source with some "minor fixes." I can't find any information on the license that this is released under, nor the modified source that it was compiled from.
Alkina seemed to imply by his comments that a GL Quake was "easy" to compile/build with Quakeforge so I'm sure all of you Linux guros can help my newbie butt out with a simple play by play.
I still cant get a gl version of Quakeforge compiled and this is why I thought that this binary of Quake 1 GLX was such a good thing.
