quakecon 2003 was expected to attract upwards of 5000 people in total attendance, with a 2100-computer BYOC network, the largest ever yet in north america, as far as i know.
CNN.com ran a story under technology for quakecon; they changed the elements in the story once or twice after the first publishing, re-wording things a little to emphasize the fact that more women and families are coming now to the event.

QuakeCon is utterly unique because of the history behind it.
The next year QuakeCon was bigger and better, topping over 650 attendees in what seemed to be the largest LAN event ever.

The NVIDIA Championships at QuakeCon will take on a slightly different flavor in 2005, with new tournaments for gamers to show off their skills as part the 10th annual QuakeCon, the largest four day gaming festival in North America.

I would recommend checking out the Official Quakecon 2006 Recon thread at http://quakecon.org/forums/showthread.php?t=5737 this forum thread has a lot more detail as far as food/bars/clubs in the area just to get an idea for what will be available when you're fragging in the BYOC and start to get hungry.
QuakeCon and its sponsors will provide many game servers for you to play on, and there will be many people running servers on their own computer as well.
Quakecon has a dedicated staff of network security technicians that will be monitoring the network throughout the event for worms, viruses, and other anomalies.

I mean I dont see any players boycotting Quakecon Tournaments because of stupid rules and even if they did the Quakecon response would be "Who cares someone will take their spot".

If you have never been to Quakecon, and you are a developer or someone who just has a question and wants the chance to talk to the developers behind the software, normally access to these folks isn't a problem.
You can find the id developers all over the Quakecon event, and normally it is just as simple as walking up to them and starting a conversation.
Attendance figures for Quakecon 2002 have not yet been released, but current estimates put the number at over 3800, perhaps closer to 4000.
